Hi all, I'm a 1st timer. My daughter is in year 2 which she entered in September 2010 she is 7yrs old, recently she has been coming home stating that she is bored, when my husband and I questioned her we found out that she had done everything that she was ment to do in maths (and probably other subjects). We questioned the teacher (whom is also her maths teacher) and stated that she has completed everything for her year group and was awaiting an email to see if she can do yr3 maths.
would this mean that she will be taught yr3 maths in class or will she be moved into yr3 completely?

Ridiculous. Every child needs to be taught at their individual level - if no child could progress beyond Y2 Maths, then no one in Y2 would be able to progress past a 2b (expected level at the end of y2) - but plenty do attain levels higher than that.

Email . Email from whom?

At my DCs school maths and English are differentiated so that the majority of the class will be being taught the aspect of the curriculum appropriate for that year. However some of the children will still be using the previous years and some the next years. eg at my recent parent meeting for my DD (Y3) her teacher gave me a leaflet on targets in Y4 maths as that is the level she is working at. It should be being done automatically.

The 'waiting for an email,' thing is weird. Standard practise is for teachers to be prepared to differentiate work for children performing up to 2yrs above & 2 yrs below the expected level for a child of that year, (it gets more difficult if they are outside that range). It'd be quite unusual for your dd to be the only child to be ready for yr3 work in yr 2. The way most schools would handle it would be to differentiate work for her within the year group.

Thanks to you all for your reply's, I did think it strange that the teacher had to wait for an email, I wrote them a letter asking for a meeting as we missed parents evening then hopefully we will be able to find out what exactly is going on.

I'm a bit confused - if she started year2 in September 10, surely she moved to year3 in September 11?

The waiting for an email might mean they are making arrangements to move her up a year for maths, but that might be hard to timetable (hence need to wait for other teachers to explore the art of the possible).
