we are looking at our local high school for girls, which would mean my DD would need to take an entrance exam in the next month. She is 6 years old, and fairly bright, always in the most abled group but not outstanding. I don't believe in tutoring a 6year old for a test, but am I going to be the only mum who hasn?!

What do you think my DD should be able to do? Any idea?

Schools will very often let you have a sample or practice exam paper. Sometimes they even have them to download on their websites. Should give you a fair idea of what is expected. Just ask at the admin office!

take a look at the y2 sats, it surely can't be that much different? I sat an entrance exam for private girls boarding school at 7, and many moons ago it just consisted of a comprehension, some verbal reasoning and a maths paper. All in silence, supervised by the head of the prep school :) I got a scolarship as well, so it can't have been that difficult Grin

Do bond books and make sure she can write a decent length story etc...

Your not going to be the only one not tutoring your child but it is fast becoming the norm to get some help for 7+.

Good luck
