Not sure if this is the appropriate board to post but as it happened at school....

DD is five and a half and the school nurse called to say she did not meet the criteria for passing the hearing test. She has referred her to audiology ( I think? - DP took the message and could not remember and did not ask any questions Hmm.

Has anybody had any experience of this or the type of hearing tests they do at the hospital for a five year old?

I'm slightly concerend as would have asked the nurse lots of questions if I had taken the call myself hence my post. I don't have the nurses number but I suppose I could ask the school but in the meantime can anybody help?

Thanks

We have two children who do wear hearing aids (reception and Y3) and noise was a concern for me as SENCO but they seem to cope quite well.

My ds has failed loads of hearing tests including the school hearing test. Lots of children get referred to paedatric audiology. My son had grommets and later on hearing aids to treat glue ear.

I that the system tha mrz describes sounds good. Its better than children waiting 6 months for a hearing test, children don't miss a morning of school and audiologists are more skilled at hearing tests. Can the teacher send down a year 1 child who ever listens in class for a hearing test, even if he has passed all his hearing tests in reception?

I imagine that a poor enviroment for testing hearing would more likely result in children with good hearing failing the test than those with bad hearing passing.

Parents are allowed to contact the school nurse if they have questions. The school can ask the school nurse to ring you.

The national deaf children's society has loads of information on its website.

lonecat it is great that your DD copes so well. My DC wears two hearing aids and first got them when he was at secondary school. He was amazed at how much he had missed when he first got them. He too seemed to be coping well and could lip read too. However he also said he hadn't realised how tiring it was to lipread and try to hear all day. Plus he can now take notes as before he either had to lipread what the teacher was saying or write it down. He couldn't do both concurrently.
It may be that your DD doesn't have a great hearing loss or her type of loss is totally different to my DCs, so apologies if what I have said above it not relevant.
If though her loss is great and you are worried about the extra noise. In a classroom situation she could use a radio aid so that the teacher's voice would go directly to her hearing aids. Plus if the noise gets too much you can of course turn them off!!!
Another poster mentioned the NDCS - they are fantastic and they have a helpline so you can call and speak to an audiologist directly.

DD failed her HV and Nursery hearing test repeatedly.
We ended up in the hospital with all sorts of guff.
She can hear perfectly.
She was just VERY stubborn and decided it was fun not to react to the bell and all that.
Audiologists thought it was funny - eventually.
