DD sat 11+ and missed by 2 points

Hi

I'm new around here so hello everyone :)

It's taken me a few days to pluck up the courage to post but I can finally share this news that my DD missed out by 2 points on her first round of tests (NVR).

After consistently achieving 90-95% on her practice papers, she actually got 85% which did not qualify her. I'm devastated and of course so was my DD :( It was heartbreaking to see her get so upset.

We have another grammar school that we are going for but I'm worried. DD says that she feels like she may have been a little distracted, she said that she felt 'so comfortable in her environment'. I suspect a certain level of complacency in my DD has reared its head, mainly from getting high scores, which is why I was so surprised when we got the scores back from School number 1. The problem is, she has sat the first round of tests for school number 2 before I knew this hence my concerns. I just didn't see this coming, if I had known I would have been able to bring her back to reality rather than allowing her to think that she would just sail through the exams.

The local comprehensive schools are really not up to scratch where I live, I'm concerned not only about her education but the area in which we live (we live in North London) gangs, violence etc. My DD is very bright and I guess I feel that she would excel on different levels in a grammar school.

Thanks for listening :)

I'm sorry she didn't pass. I live in a selective area and there have been a lot of disappointed parents that I know recently. Only three kids in dd,s school passed.

Hopefully your dd will pass the second test.

LadyInPink · 18/11/2011 20:09

Where we live (SW England) the children have to be in the top 3% - a friends DD got 97% and so didn't pass so with those standards in mind even a consistant 90-95% wouldn't have cut the mustard down here, but it is still a shame about your DD.

The fact you have another chance is amazing, there is no such thing down here so all the best for School number 2 Smile

Oh :o shocking...she must be sooo upset Hmm

Maybe you could just try being grateful your child is happy, healthly and stop pushing her to try and be something she isn't. It's the 11 plus not a Nuclear Physicist degree Shock

Mum1369 · 18/11/2011 20:26

If you just miss out, can't you apply to be interviewed ? Sorry not very clear, but I heard you could appeal decision and the kids teachers can add info or something?

Sammz · 18/11/2011 20:29

Nothing in my original post says that I am not grateful or my child being happy and healthy, this goes without saying, of course. My DD wanted to try for these schools. Our 2 local schools have had a number of issues including stabbings and gang violence and she doesn't want to go to either of them. Understandably so.

good luck with the second school. it is very heartbreaking to not get something u have strived hard to achieve.
since she has taken the exam now try to get her to relax and take her mind off it.

Wtf topknob, nice name there btw.

Very sorry to hear about your daughter OP. Hopefully the second test will go much better since she knows to be on her toes this time. Good luck.

seeker · 19/11/2011 14:41

Did her head teacher appeal for her?

breadandbutterfly · 19/11/2011 15:38

You have a choice of 6, don't you, in N London? So hopefully some of the other 4 are feasible alternatives to the gang-infested schools?

I'm trying to picture where you could be - I grew up in N London and it's not really a gangs-type area at all, that I'm aware of.

It sounds like your dd is bright - again, the only grammar schools I know of in N London are all hugely competitive and it would be unwise for any child to be overconfident before knowing she'd passed - i'd say 95% was more like a minimum to aim for for those schools than a maximum.

Good luck to your dd.

I feel for you as my ds missed out on a grammar pass (doesn't mean guaranteed entry here though) by 2 marks. If I'm honest I think that was a true reflection of his abilities - he's just not quite there on the English though fab at maths. However, it sounds as if your dd could do it next time and I really hope she does. What a shame there's no middle ground, either the grammar or these other schools you mentioned. Possible to try for a scholarship to an indie? Good luck to you both, Sammz.

motherinferior · 20/11/2011 12:59

Have you actually gone and looked at your local comps? What are the kids there - the ones you know - like?

LynetteScavo · 20/11/2011 13:03

Just wanted you to know I feel your pain.

There was a lot of Shock when DS missed a grammar school place by 2 points, his junior school were under the impression we wanted him to go to the Catholic comprehensive he was offered a place at, so didn't say anything when they received the scores, then there was faffing from DSs teacher, suggesting we appeal, which I decided not to.

I was gutted, and I mean gutted for about four days. The scores he achieved on practice papers, and his ability in school lead me to believe he would walk the 11+.

Good luck. Smile

cyb · 20/11/2011 13:13

Isnt she on the waiting list?

My d missed the score by 2 points, stayed on the waiting list (she was 12th initially) while we compiled an appeal ,but we heard very soon she had got into the school

Also girls have continued to join the school later on during the school years, when other girls have left

LynetteScavo · 20/11/2011 16:37

as cyb says, if you really want a place at the grammar school, hang in there.

Sammz · 20/11/2011 17:04

Thanks to everyone for the comments, yes we have seen 6 comprehensives in total. We named 2 grammar school plus 4 comprehensives in our preferences.

We will wait for the 2nd results to come through before deciding whether to go forward with an appeal.
