APP does seem to be being phased out even though several teachers appreciate its usefulness. The Nat Strat site was never the easiest of sites to navigate and now that the content has been archived, it is anybody's guess where everything is.

The above is not the National Strategies documents but does give you all the APP statements. You will need to join TES to access them though.

Hope that helps in some way.

Sorry looks like the link didn't do what I expected...

If you google APP Guidelines rather than grids I think some local authorities have them on their websites.

"APP does seem to be being phased out"

Really?! If that's true, thank-god! Absolute nightmare from a teacher's point of view!

I am very anti SATS/ QCA papers, but I am also not impressed by APP, especially if you do it as a target child is representative of a group.

If a parent asked me for APP grids, I'd happily get them one. Have you asked?

blackeyedsusan · 18/11/2011 22:25

thanks

I have asked. not sure the teacher was sure if it was ok to give them out. she is new to the school and we are both trying to feel our way through what to do with dd's reading as neither of us have been there before. (i taught early years/she is nqt in new school) dd has just been assessed by the head and given new books and we were told to ask her questions, talk about vocab and write book reports. I wanted to check that I am not missing out stuff.

the scary thing is these app things have come and now seem to be going in the time I have been out of teaching. Confused I have finally rediscovered an interest in what is going on, only to find loads of stuff is archived and it seems to have disappeared into the ether. all I can find is some vague waffle about updating stuff. it does make you wonder what you are supposed to be teaching in the meantime.

I gave quite a few of my parents the assessments we use for guided reading- they show the different focus points, and the type of question to ask to elicit that form of response. No-one 'officially' said I could, but I had spares so....

blackeyedsusan · 19/11/2011 00:50

dd's school give absolutely no guidance at all about reading, apart from the first meeting at the beginning of term in reception. thats it, you are on your own after that. no comments, no guidance on what to practise until this week when she was assessed by the head and given significantly harder reading books and I was told to ask her questions and discuss vocabulary (which is how she learnt to read the books in the first place!) wanted to check on the areas to cover, make sure i haven't missed anything.

That's exactly the Local Authority I was thinking of blackeyedsusan, but couldn't remember it's name. I really like their literacy resources. Have you seen these?
