Do you think this is acceptable at school?

I am doing some research in a school at the moment and I am surprised to find that the mixed reception and Y1 class sit down and watch CBeebies every Friday before hometime. Is this usual? And do you think it is OK?

It depends how long they do it for I suppose. If its only ten minutes then why not? Quite a nice little treat. If it is for two or three hours, then I'd be a touch concerned!

muckandbullets · 17/11/2011 18:26

It is for about twenty minutes, not all afternoon!

I was just a bit taken aback. Most of them will be watching it when they get home surely, why would they need to watch it at school?

I'm surprised Y1 kids are watching Cbeebies! Round here you are a 'baby' if you even watch it in Reception. I think by the end of Fri they are so tired, they're probably not able to concentrate well, but I would rather they had a bit of extra time to play/ run around than to watch TV.

LIZS · 17/11/2011 18:30

Is it their "golden time" ?

muckandbullets · 17/11/2011 18:31

no, this school doesn't have golden time. It's just part of their Friday routine.

Depends what they are watching. I tell me children that they are not at school I watch telly whenever they ask but I do show them cbeebies bedtime story at the end of the day sometimes.

chickensaregreen · 17/11/2011 18:35

Sorry. That was a terrible post! Must read back carefully before pressing send!

dixiechick1975 · 17/11/2011 18:41

DD used to watch TV in reception sometimes - maybe once a fortnight?

Used to watch recorded episodes of auntie mabel from cbeebies.

Teacher was very experienced and recognised when they needed a little quiet time.

I had no issue with it.

They don't in yr 1 as far as I know.

I have no problem with watching TV in school at all, especially not CBeebies where most content is somewhat educational anyway.

Hulababy · 17/11/2011 18:57

What are they watching?

I work in a Y1 class and sometimes we put on an episode or two of Alphablocks or Numberjacks in story time. Not regular but as a change every so often.

Joyn · 17/11/2011 19:29

20mins 1x a week. Seems like a nice treat to me!

dearheart · 17/11/2011 19:49

If this is the only time they do it, I think it is fine. My dd would love it.

2cats2many · 17/11/2011 19:51

My DD hardly gets any tv at home (and almost never in the evening after school), so it would be a massive treat for her. Better than chocolate.

tabulahrasa · 17/11/2011 19:52

The 20 minutes before hometime on a Friday is wasted anyway as far as work output is concerned - they're all just waiting for the weekend, lol

ByTheWay1 · 17/11/2011 20:05

Don't think it is a problem - but do watch out - our school really spoiled things for us - by showing "The Snowman" as a Christmas treat - we were planning to share our first family viewing with grandparents the following weekend. I was so upset - why didn't they ask..... :(

eaglewings · 17/11/2011 20:13

Bytheway, the poor teachers are lucky to be breathing by the end of term, it is normal to watch a video in the last week, we have never been told what. I think it is asking to much of them to run it past all the parents

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 17/11/2011 21:10

I think it's OK as long as they choose the programme carefully. Alphablocks, Numberjacks and Come Outside are very educational in approach and definitely suitable for 5 year olds. If they just stick it on then I would question that.

pointythings · 17/11/2011 22:12

I think most of CBeebies would be fine for that age group, a nice gentle wind-down at the end of the week. Mine are 8 and 10 now and I still have fond memories of the Bedtime Hour and how it relaxed them on weekend nights - these days it's all Victorious and iCarly and OMG they grow up so fast!

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 17/11/2011 22:23

DS 's class watched Bob the Builder today apparently!

I think its a nice treat at the end of a week.

ShatnersBassoon · 17/11/2011 22:25

Asseptable. We used to watch things like Words and Pictures at school.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 17/11/2011 22:29

Oh yes - with the magic pencil :o
