What percentage of year 2 children would you expect to get a level 3s at the end of year 2 in a good state school?

about a third?

pilates · 17/11/2011 12:00

No I wouldn't expect it to be as much as a third, I would think 2/3 in a class but I'm only a mum and not a teacher so could be wrong.

seeker · 17/11/2011 12:04

I think about 15%? Hang on -I'll find out.

jeee · 17/11/2011 12:06

As another thread pointed out a couple of weeks ago, year 2 SATs tend to be artificially high when children swap schools after them. Which could well affect the percentage in any given school.

Iamnotminterested · 17/11/2011 12:14

In my DC's school last year the figures were as follows (Approximate)

Reading - 30%
Speaking and listening - 35%
Maths - 20%
science - 10%
Writing - 18%

suburbandream · 17/11/2011 12:19

I thought the expected level was 2a at the end of year 2? So if this is the average then this is what the majority will be expected to achieve with a small number above and below that.

Iamnotminterested · 17/11/2011 12:22

2B is the expected level.

didyousee · 17/11/2011 12:34

There just seem to be a huge number of dc in my dss year who genuinely will get level 3s. I think this is a fluke as there weren't that many in previous years.
It is strange because my ds is doing really well, but so are loads of his friends so it it kind of the norm.

If its a normal distribution then 25% should be above and 25% below, but then that is a national average so if it is a good school, which is academically good not well being happy good, then you should have more in the average to good top 25%. So in a class of 30 you would expect probably 8-10 children to be getting 2a or 3

redskyatnight · 17/11/2011 13:23

National results 2010 (% obtaining Level 3)

speaking & listening 21%
reading 26%
writing 12%
maths 18%
science 21%

didyousee · 17/11/2011 13:41

Thanks everyone. That is interesting. There are a lot of dcs at my dss school who are bizarrely good at maths and writing.

May be a high-achieving year, they can vary hugely from one year to the next, I certainly doubt whether this years year 2 cohort at my DD's school will be as good as last years. we will see.

didyousee · 17/11/2011 14:00

Pre school said they were a clever year. Looks like they were right. Sometimes feel like i expect more from my ds than is normal because of it, which probably isn't fair.
Still haven't got a clue what dds year will be like (reception).

I have (almost) no idea what SAT results other people's children get; am always impressed that anybody would know so much. Did the school tell you or is it just a common parental gossip item?

Was no more than 5 level 3s given out at all (55+ kids) in DS1's year, that's the only year the school gave us any stats written out. I know that quite a few in there were very bright kids, too. I wonder in retrospect if the y2 teacher (nqt) was quite hard on the marking, actually (which I don't mind in the least). Because I am the only person on MN who ever reports that their child's Y3 autumn NC levels soared in comparison to KS1 results.

I think you can find those stats online now if you hunt hard. I've often seen published numbers (?Ofsted) of about 20% of the children getting L3 in at least one subject, which means plenty might get 3 in maths but 2c in something else, that kind of thing.

everpuzzled · 17/11/2011 14:14

Our school usually has about 50% level 3's though writing consistently in the high 40's so slightly less. 98% achieved at least a 2b the last 3 years.

didyousee · 17/11/2011 15:05

I go and help in my dss class so have a pretty good idea where they are at (though i never share it in RL). i don't know if it is good to know as much as i do or better to be oblivious. Probably the latter.

I think there are differences between year cohorts - both my DDs were born into academically very strong year cohorts in my area. I like it, it means they don't get picked on for doing well at school because so many of them do Smile.

ibizagirl · 18/11/2011 06:06

At my daughters school it was only her and another girl who got 3A in their sats. The others got 2 and some were only just on a 1 but 2B was the expected level i think at the time, unless its changed.

Feenie · 18/11/2011 14:51

No, national expectation is still 2b.
