My son is in Yr 1 and had his parents evening tonight....just wondering if anyone knows where you can access information on levels which children should be at?

You can always ask here!
Children are expected to be around 1a/1b by the end of year 1 ( some schools/LAs say one, some the other!) However at the beginning of the year many children will still be working on ELG's from the EYFS and some will have moved on to the NC levels. There is no DIRECT correlation between the two, although there can be some trends!

Have a look at curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/
Basically usually start yr1 at level 1c, 1a by end of yr 1. I think the national expectation for yr 2 has gone up recently from 2b to 2a. Then 4b by end of yr 6.

DS is at around P6 for Maths, Reading and Writing

Basically most start Y1 still working towards ELGs
The expected level for the end of KS1 is 2 (a 2B is a secure level 2)

Is that from the Foundation Profiles? If so, that is the "average" for the end of Reception, so perhaps a little behind for this point in Year 1 ( but depends on whether the school have completed any summative assessment at this point in the year-we don't do ours until the end of November) but not excessively so!

The school has said your son is P6?
or that his profile score is 6?

Anna85 · 15/11/2011 19:36

yeah P6 apparently the level before 1C or something like that!

Argh! P6 should only be used for children with SEN !

All pupils in mainstream Foundation Stage classes and throughout the Autumn term of Year One should be assessed against the Early Learning Goals. QCA recommend that pupils aged 3 -5 years should not routinely be assessed using ?P? scales.

If, at the beginning of the Spring Term, pupils are still performing below National Curriculum Level One either generally or in a specific aspect of learning, schools should begin to assess progress using the appropriate P scales.

If at this stage, a child?s current rate of progress is inadequate, it would be strongly advisable for schools to consult the LA?s Criteria for Placement document and consider placement on the SEN record

I'm sorry but I get so annoyed when schools use P levels for young children
