Tutor for Y2??

Is year 2 too young for a general tutor? DD is below national average for writing, maths and English. School seem to think that is "fine". I would like to give her a boost somehow. She would respond much better to a third party tutor than to me.

How much below is she (do you have her levels)?

And how old is she (is she a summer baby)?

They mature so much in Y2 that it's impossible at this stage of the year to know what she'll be like by the end of the year.

Agree with Indigo that progress in yr2 can be like a rollercoaster especially with summer borns. why not take a look at some of the free online resources eg bbc bitesize KS1 maths?

I think she's too young. My dd was way behind and this age. She is in year 8 now and in top set for everything.

Sorry op I too was told my ds was average and was considering a tutor. He is a summer born baby and writing he is below nc average.
What I do is use the schofield and sims books he loves doing them as they are easy to understand and user friendly. I do worry about him and want to give him a boost.

I like Memoo reply as it gives me hope for ds on future years.

Ps I did try tutoring was ok.

If you willing to do the work you can probably do it without a tutor. A y2 child is still very young and as others said they can change a lot in Y2. However, you are also right to be concerned and I too would feel the same if my child was below the national average...but again it depends on how low she actually is. There are a lot of free online resources available and also try and encourage the reading/comprehension/spelling.
You will find a plenty of books in your local bookshop for Key stage 1 if looking for materials to work with.

Was told she is predicted 2c's.
I think I'll book an additional appointment with the teacher to discuss how we can boost her up a bit.
I am in the classic situation of having elder DS who is bright and finds school fairly easy. DD is an early May baby. DS is mid May.

Please chill.

A 2c for a May baby is absolutely fine. You have nothing o worry about.

I'm a Y2 teacher and think employing a tutor is unnecessary for children this age. The school is predicting a 2C which is only slightly behind national expectations spend a few extra minutes reading and talking and stop worrying

ok. Thanks. Will stop worrying. I do tend to worry about most things!!!
