How often does your DC read their reading books before swapping them?

I send DS1's back for swapping after he has read them once but he told me today that the TA said he should be reading them more than once. We don' do reading every day and it takes the teacher a couple of days to actually swap them so it basically works out as 2 new books a week (he gets 2 at a time).

He reads them through easily first time so I don't see the point of reading them again but am I missing something??

dd gets two new books every day at school, one to read and one to 'share'

My ds only reads them once - if they were really stretching, or very interesting content, we'd read them more but they're not. He reads every night, usually, just not school reading books.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/11/2011 21:33

we get one a week.

It comes home on a friday, readt about 3 times over the weekend (they practise them at school through the week too) and send it back on Monday.

I'd like more books - in terms of quantity and challenge for ds, but his teacher assures me that he's doing fine and this is working well.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 11/11/2011 21:37

We read them once and DD would not countenance reading them again unless she found them much more interesting. When DS was doing the reading scheme a few years back, he simply refused to read them at all! He still won't read, unless it's about sport.

ceebeegeebies · 11/11/2011 21:39

Glad it is not just me then - can't really see the point of reading the books again when he didn't struggle with anything the first time round. Just not sure where the TA is coming from tbh.

He does read his own books at home if he is in the mood Grin

Yr3 and get 1 fiction + 1 non-fiction per week. Never read them twice.

frasersmummy · 11/11/2011 21:47

ds is p2 his group all get the same book for the whole week and they read it to the teacher in bits over the week.

At home we read it twice.. first time just to get the words and then the second time we try to read with expression ... and look out for stuff teacher has asked about eg adjectives or speech marks

I could read it more often with ds but we both get bored with it and ds starts paraphrasing cos he knows what it says but cant be bothered to read every word

So the rest of the week we read other stuff.. eg this week its a library book about working with animals we have been reading. Clearly ds cant read all of this but he reads what he can and I fill in the gaps.

I think seeing that he can go to the library pick a book that interests him and read at least some of it has really built his confidence

My DS in year 1 changes his book daily even if he hasn't read the previous one!

ASuitableGirl · 11/11/2011 21:49

DD reads hers once - they are ORT with 32 pages and tbh they are OK once (she has some that DS didn't have so at least there is a little variety) but reading them twice would be silly I think.

DS has books over 100 pages long and so having to read them twice would definitely take up longer than necessary. He changes them himself though.

An0therName · 11/11/2011 22:05

twice - gets 2 books a week - if we are feeling keen read something else the other days - Y1

hanaka88 · 12/11/2011 05:51

We get one a week and read it every night. Well 'read' as in retell. My son can't read or sound out but can memorise well so I guess I'm hoping he'll memorise some words Grin I can dream.

mrsbaffled · 12/11/2011 12:49

DS gets one a week. He is expected to have finished it and read from it 3+ times in a week. But he reads it in 15 minutes and then doesn't want to read it again! He reads freely at home, so I am rather unconcerned about what books he gets home from school tbh

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 12/11/2011 14:11

One a week here, reception.

It's too infrequent, even my 2.10yo ( DD's baby brother) was reciting all the words to her last book by the time is went back Grin DD isn't reading it /trying to read it after the first few goes and it is just remembered - occasionally glance at the pictures for a reminder.

RueDeWakening · 12/11/2011 19:26

DD is in reception and gets a new book on Mondays and Thursdays. She reads it to us the night it comes home - she often reads to me when she gets in, then DH at bedtime (or vice versa). I quite enjoy the books too Blush they're Heinemann Storyworlds ones, and quite nicely written.

Other nights she reads a bit of whatever she wants - anything from ORT to picture books to chapter books - currently having a Dr Seuss phase. And days like today (library visit) we trade off - she reads a chapter/reading scheme book to me, in return for me reading her a story :o

RosemaryandThyme · 12/11/2011 19:45

Two a day - One factual, One fiction book, changed daily (age 6) has read 90 odd books since september (all quite short 32-68 pages) - school don't like them changed so frequently and would like them read twice before being changed, I like them changed daily as Ds wont read them twice, therefore I write in his reading log "read twice" - keeps everyone happy.

Joyn · 12/11/2011 20:07

I think it's usual to read the short books they get in foundation 2-3x before changing them as it builds their confidence etc. But once they are on level 4 (ORT) or equivalent I think the need to do this isn't really there anymore. That's how I've always done it anyway & school have been fine with it. If their books weren't changed we just read something else from home/library & wrote that in the diary so they'd know we'd done some reading.

ceebeegeebies · 12/11/2011 22:58

Joyn interestingly, this week I did write in his diary that he had been reading other books from home and that is when his TA told him he should be reading his reading book twice Hmm I don't know what stage he is on tbh as they mix up the brand of books (iyswim) that it is difficult to work it out. Plus the books he is reading at home are much more complicated so surely that is a good thing that he is reading this??

Hmm, perhaps I've just been lucky with my dcs & their school. Maybe what you could try is reading the school book on the first night & then on the second night splitting your usual reading session in half, reading 1/2 the school book & a couple of pages (or whatever,) of your own book & writing both in the diary. Cant see how they could object to that (hopefully,) & he'll get through it 2x in 3 days & then you can get another one.

Kardashianw · 14/11/2011 12:52

Once a week every wed for both children. I have even asked of ds book can be changed before then or can 2 be sent home but they won't. I would like it if they would do that as ds whizzes through the books.
