1c is perfect for this stage in Y1. Don't worry :)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 10/11/2011 14:30

We had Y1 parents evening recently and they didn't mention any levels at all, just said that they were happy with DS's progress.

alana39 · 10/11/2011 14:33

By the end of year 2 when they do their SATs I think 2b is average. So 1 something would be what you'd expect in year 1 I guess.

It is only the first term - I've just had a year 2 parents' evening and DS2 is 2c / 2b in things, a year on from your son so that all sounds normal to me.

Bayliss1 · 10/11/2011 14:34

As previously said, 1c is the correct place for your child at this stage of year 1. By the end of the year (July) an average year 1 child would be 1a/2c so your child is on task for this. The levels go 1c, 1b, 1a,2c,2b,2a,3c,3b,3a etc. A child should aim to move up 2 sub-levels during each school year but sometimes more, sometimes less. Children tend to move more quickly up the levels lower down the school (key stage 1).

Bayliss1 · 10/11/2011 14:36

Yes alana39, 2b is where an average year 2 child should be by the end of the year.

IndigoBell · 10/11/2011 14:37

In KS1 they should make 3 sublevels progress a year.

In KS2 the should make 1.5 sublevels progress a year.

By the end of Y1 they should be a 1b or above.

crazygracieuk · 10/11/2011 14:56

The Reception grades are not linked to NC grades (ie. you don't achieve a 9 before moving up to level 1c)

My son left Reception on mainly 5s and is a 1c which is average for year 1. He is targetted 1a and 2c by the end of the year.

Bayliss1 · 10/11/2011 15:42

Looks like different schools have different expectations!!! I've taught in ks1 and ks2 in the same school and the 2 sub-levels are expected throughout.

soandsosmummy · 10/11/2011 15:44

Reception is measured on EYFS which I think goes to 9. In year 1 its measured on national curriculum which is a completely different scale and from what's been said above i think your son is fine :)

IndigoBell · 10/11/2011 15:47

Different schools do have different expectations.

However you're meant to make 2 levels in KS1 and 2 levels in KS2.

KS 1 is 2 years, and KS 2 is 4 years.

So for a school to have the same expectations throughout KS1 and KS2 is frankly weird.

In KS2 2 sub levels is good progress. And most schools expect that, because everyone wants good progress. But actually 1 sub level 1 year, and 2 sub levels the next are acceptable.

Whereas in Y2 making only 2 sub levels is not good progress.

IndigoBell · 10/11/2011 15:48

I guess if you make 2 sub levels in Y1 and Y2, you'll go 1a end of Y1, and 2b end of Y2 and you'll be fine.

So maybe I've got it all wrong.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2011 15:55

Isn't it crazy that they didn't tell you what 1c meant?

Joyn · 10/11/2011 16:27

1c is totally normal, means hopefully 1a end of yr1 & 2b (gov expectation,) by end yr 2.

mrz · 10/11/2011 17:23

Remember too we are only half a term into Y1 he could be higher by the end of term

HoneyandHaycorns · 10/11/2011 18:38

I don't really get the idea that kids should make different amounts of progress in ks1 and ks2 Confused. Surely it depends on the levels that they are on, and the gap between those levels?

So, if a bright dc finishes year 1 on a 2a or a 3c for example, they would be expected to make 3 sub levels of progress in year 2? But a dc finishing year 2 on the same levels would only be expected to make 1.5 sub levels of progress in year 3? That can't be right!!

Surely the expected progress should be the same for each year, or there should be some sort of guide as to how long it shoul take to move from a 2b to say, a 3b?

Or am I not making any sense? Confused

mrz · 10/11/2011 18:44

The guide is that it should take 1 year to move from 1B to 2B and two years to move from 2B to 3B and another two years to move from 3B to 4B

HoneyandHaycorns · 10/11/2011 18:45

Thanks mrz - makes much more sense!

mrz · 10/11/2011 19:02

obviously just a rough guide as children's progress is rarely linear

MASKEMO · 10/11/2011 19:04

Thanks so much for these guidelines and advise, it's really helped looks like I need to stop worrying, is strange they didn't explain. Maybe they forget that parents don't always fully understand when it's your first child in primary. She did say she would expect him to reach 2c by end of year 1 so now it is clearer.
