How often does a teacher read with each child in yr1?

Just wondering how often, on average, you'd expect a child to read with the actual class teacher (rather than TA or parent helper).
My ds has only read once with the teacher so far this year and that was when I asked if he could go up a reading level as he had been on the same for about 9 mths. I know teachers are very busy and I know they will be assessing them in other ways but it doesn't seem like much.

do you mean individually or in a group?

group reading possibly every other week i think. individualy, not sure she has.

It is difficult to listen to all the children read individually but group/guided reading should be happening at least every 2 weeks. Guided reading is a much more interactive situation and gives the teacher a better gauge of what the child can do and what they need to do in order to move on.

You should keep listening to your child read at least 4 times each week and ask your child questions about what is being read.

The reason I ask is because when we said he's been on the same book level now for 9 mths, she said 'oh, has he? Ok, we'll have a look at that'. The next day the teacher read with him and moved him up a level.
Personally, I think he's been ready to move up for ages but thought that the teacher would know best so I left it. My thought is, if we'd never asked would he have stayed there longer.
There is one note that he has read in a group in the diary, so i'm guessing that it's only once that he's done it.

That doesn't sound good that the teacher had only done guided reading once!!! It is difficult to know what level every child is on and I personally don't check how long a child has been on a level but every school is different. Do the children not work through a set if books in sequence?? My advice would be to keep an eye on the issue and just get your child reading other material at home like signs, magazines, books from the library etc. I can't stress enough how important reading is...it really is the core for me!!

My ds is listened to everyday. I would say the teacher listens to him 4 out of 5 days. He is in a small class though (18) but I am pleased that he is having a new book every day.

You are lucky that your child is in such a small class and I am jealous of the teacher!!! I have 30 in my class! Not really sure it's good that your child's reading book is changed every day though because there are many things that can be done with a book as well as reading it...question and answer, what might happen next, what would you do if, etc

I have a year 1 class of 22 children.
I hear a group read each day - so I would hear each child once a week. The children would read about 2 pages each of a group book. These are different than the books sent home. I ask parents to write in their home school diary when they are ready to move up a level on the home books as I don't hear the children read the colour books unless its assessment week (once a term).

Bare in mind that reading is also taught through phonics sessions aswell so I often hear children practicing reading and decoding during thoses sessions.

I think the above is pretty standard. I've worked in 2 schools and this is how its always done.
Unfortunatly there isn't the time in the curriculum to hear every child read every day on their own. (thats why we send books home so you can do it!! Grin

Books are changed every day though. (unless its homework day).

I'm not aware that DS HAS read to his teacher this year. He reads to parents helpers and the TA and is benchmarked by the TA and has moved up a band twice. Each time teacher has initialled the TAs entry in DS's record book and comments " well done" but it's TA who sorts out books.

dd is year 1 and reads once per week with the reading specialist who changes her book and she has guided reading with her teacher once per week too. We are expected to read daily each night on top - although i usually only do 5 nights per week!
