Hi, just a quick question.
DD1 came back with her 1st reading book from school given by the teacher, she is in year 2 but has not done year1 or reception (came straight from kindergarden). It is "sleeping beauty" from lady bird tales.
DD1 seems to think that she has 2 days to read it Confused. I think it is a bit much for her, she can probably do it in a week but 2 days is going to take a long time (and I am going to go mad listening to that with a crazy 21 months old DD2).
3 pages took about 15 min, there are 22 in total (with 5 to 7 sentences). Would you think it is too much? shall I warn the teacher? or let it be?
TIA

Just do the reading at your DD's pace and put a note in the reading record book [if she has one] explaining as you have here. Rushing may put DD off which a teacher won't want!

What was she reading at kindergarten? I would talk to the teacher. The book sounds too hard and it might put her off wanting to read. Something a little bit easier will boost her confidence, and the last thing she or you want is for reading to become a chore.

I don't think that a book that is 22 pages long with 5 to 7 sentences per page is a priori too much for a Y2 child - some Y2 children are going to be reading a lot longer books than this with ease - but if it is too hard for your DD, mention it to the teacher.

No reading at kindergarden. She has only be reading since september. (catching up). That is why I don't want to push her too much. She is doing very well, but 11 pages would take ages (at least 1h30 min if no question) I don't think she will concentrate for that long.
I will put a note and say she has done her best. She will probably manage half the book with a gentle push and help for words like "christening"
Thanks.

She is doing really well if she only started reading in September. I am sure she will soon be reading easily if you take it at her pace. Well done to your dd.

Also there are simpler Lady Bird Tales. I think Sleeping Beauty is a level 3 or 4 Lady Bird? If she likes the fairy stories maybe the school has some of the level one and twos. As Banana says she is doing amazingly well if she only started reading in September.

All resolved! She got 2 weeks so plenty of time (never trust a 6 yo!).
Also, 2boys, they gave the books by "ability to understand", so DD1 has one of the most difficult one because her comprehension is very good. They think "decrypting" can be challenged (I hope they are right and she won't be put off Confused).
Thanks all.
