When did you start play dates?

My DS is in reception & has been asking me to invite his friends over for so that he can play with them after school. He is an only child and is late summer born. He is somewhat awkward in social situations and I can see that play dates may be of benefit to him.

However, aren?t reception children too young for play dates? He is sometimes tired after school. But other days, he seems absolutely fine.

With DD it was pre-school and with DS it was Reception.

Very normal to organise them in Reception - as you say, lots of parents like to have their DC's friends over to help new friendships along.

DD2 has had a few people over already. Yes, they're tired, but she certainly managed to play very nicely and saved up all the tired/grotty/unreasonable behaviour for me at the end of the playdate! Monday nights are good as its the start of the week.

Thanks for you replies. I will try & set up a playdate for DS for the beginning of the week.

Got for it - having playdates helps to nuture friendships, particularly helpful for those who are "awkward in social situations". Mine started having them at 3/4. They get a lot easier as they get older ...
