  • Collins Junior Illustrated Dictionary (have ordered thesaurus already)
  • Illustrated Dictionary of Maths (Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries)
  • Math: Maths for Mums and Dads or Illustrated Dictionary of Maths (Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries)?

We have maths work books for 5-6 year-olds (wonder whether it is enough to understand the modern way of teaching maths).

My child is 6.

Many thanks!

What do you want to know? Or do you want to buy them?

I have Maths for Mums and Dads and it's very good. Explains a lot. Don't have the others.

It looks as I have forgotten too many things from maths. How am I going to help my kid with maths in this case? Thus I am in need of a maths book which will help both me and my kid.

I have just read the thread Please can you advise me on this numeracy and it is so different to what I had learn at school. We would never do it like 322-162 = (300-100) + 22 - 62 = 200 + 22 - 62 = (220-60) + 2 - 2 = 160 + 2 - 2 = 160
Here is the way I know. That is why I need the book to teach me new methods.

I'm going to buy the illustrated dictionary on the recommendation of a friend (our kids are 6). I have Maths for Mums and Dads and have only looked at it briefly once so don't particularly recommend it.

Well, 1 should be under 3; easier with formatting in word.doc or on the paper than here.

What is wrong with the Math book? Can I manage with the maths work books? I believe they should show all the modern maths methods.

Maths for M and D should help then. It explains new methods clearly.
There are often threads on here that explain specific stuff. They have certainly helped me.
My nephew was also very good at helping me understand new methods. If soemthing has been taught well, your child should be able to tell you - unless they are stuck. Nephew's school also handed out sheets explaining stuff to parents. Know that our school won't do this.
My ds is still only in yr1 so have a few years before I really need to panic.

Mine is also in Y1 but I am already panicking :)
Have the new methods been easier to understand than the old ones?
