What's the average cost of an overnight primary school trip?

DDs primary school has sent out a letter advising of a considerable hike in the cost of this year's residential trip (one overnight), they are asking for a "voluntary contribution" of in the region of £80. Last years cost about £50. I think they will be doing things at an activity centre which they didn't use to do, so it is hard to compare like with like - so I am wondering, is £80 or so way out of line, or are other primary schools asking for similar amounts? Thanks!

It's probably not outrageous for what they'll be doing, and travel costs are a magor, major part of trips, but it's not a sum of money that most parents in ds's school could afford! For one single night, at primary level, it's far too much.

Ours is£52 for a one night residential Y2 trip. We have to take them and collect them though - local adventure centre.

Not a bad price if it includes travel costs.

Nearly £300 for 5 day/4 night trip Hmm Glad I don't have twins! We do get to pay in installments, which I suppose is something, and I think there are (small) measures for those who really can't afford.

OtterBjitch · 03/11/2011 14:32

Just paid £110 for a two-night trip for Y3.

DunRovin · 03/11/2011 14:36

DC is on a school journey of 4 days / 4 nights to an activity centre, cost £165. Subsidised by PTA fundraising, though.

EdithWeston · 03/11/2011 14:36

We're being asked c£400 (subject to final transport costs) for a full week at an activity centre - so £80 seems OK from here. Whether it's good vfm will I suppose depend on how much and what is laid on for them.

Poppyella · 03/11/2011 14:36

£270 for a 5 day/4 night 'activity' residential in Year 6 - ds currently there this week.

And I have got twins!! Not looking forward to when it's their turn!

EdithWeston · 03/11/2011 14:36

(no PTA subsidy for us)

IndieSkies · 03/11/2011 14:38

Popy - are yours at the IoW?
Mine are Grin

£250 for 5 days 4 nights at activity centre in y6, £150 for 2 night geog type trip in y 5.

IndieSkies · 03/11/2011 14:59

About £160-£170 for 5 days / 4 nights at the Isle of Wight in primary.

PandaG · 03/11/2011 15:01

£165 for 48 hours at a Youth hostel about half an hour down the road from us. Lots of outdoorsy activities included. DS went, but I thought it was very expensive.

AVoidkaTheKillerZombies · 03/11/2011 15:05

£110 for a 2 nights stay (from midday weds to midday Friday) at a PGL type place in the midlands.

Groovee · 03/11/2011 17:28

It was £285.75 for dd's 5 day/4 nights with transport included and all equipment and full board

hockeyforjockeys · 03/11/2011 17:47

Our school charges £180 for a 7 day residential on a farm.

pointythings · 03/11/2011 19:00

DD1 is going to the Isle of Wight next week - £200 for 4 days, three nights, including activities, full board and transport at a posh activity place. Seems reasonable to me.

She had a trip in Yr 3 which was nearby - 2 days one night for £45, and in Yr 4 had a 2-day trip in north Norfolk which was £140 for 3 days 2 nights, again in an activity centre and that seemed good value to me.

3duracellbunnies · 03/11/2011 19:16

Have heard that the yr 6 trip to iow is over #400 for 4 nights, 5 days. Ouch, even though mine are all singletons, with three will be 1200; plus inflation.

ByTheWay1 · 03/11/2011 19:42

Our Y6 residential PGL activity trip is £350 they leave school Mon lunchtime and leave there Fri lunchtime - so it is 3 and a bit days of activities - parents are "peeved".

Hulababy · 03/11/2011 19:51

IIRR DD's Y3 and Y4 trips to Centre Parcs (3 nights/4 days inc activities) was about £180.

She is in Y5 now and is going to France for 3 nights/4 days next term and that is about £280 iirr.

In a couple of week's time she is having a 2 night residential weekend via school. That is about £70 I think, no transport in that though as we take her.

She recently did a PGL with brownies for 2 nights and think that was about £90.

IndieSkies · 04/11/2011 11:07

The IoW trips to the Kingswood Centre vary in cost depending on time of year. More expensive in summer, cheaper now.
And it's clear how hard some schools work to keep the cost to parents down, with school and PTA subsidy.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/11/2011 11:11

4 days , 4 night trip at an activity centre down the road is £340 here.
