10 yr olds homework is to watch a soap!

Um - really? They have been set the task of watching a soap and identifying characters who are 'in a relationship' and give reasons why they are.

I get the reasons behind it, but - we don't watch soaps (or any TV) so can anyone recommend a suitable soap for a 10 year old that I can find an episode of on iplayer?

Thanks!

Go for Neighbours - it's on quite early and isn't cluttered up with murderers.

I've just checked for you. It goes out at 5,30 on Channel Five, and is also available on Five On Demand (as is Home and Away).

I'm glad DD hasn't had been set this. This house is a soap free zone.
DH seems to think the other kind of soap is optional this week, but that's another thread.

MrsCog · 02/11/2011 15:40

I would have thought that any TV programme that has people in relationships would be suitable - I imagine they've stated soap as that's probably the most accessible for most children (as most people watch soaps).

NotaDisneyMum · 02/11/2011 15:41

Our house is a TV free zone - hence the need to find one online!

Definitely "Neighbours". The others are not suitable. Why is your house a tv free zone? Hmm Do you not watch it,or not have one?

mpsw · 02/11/2011 16:19

The Aussie ones do tend to be less "gritty" than the British ones.

I'm not sure I ever worked out who's who, though, so good luck!

I can give you a Home and Away synopsis if you like Blush Grin

Brax and Charlie are in an on-off relationship: they are both crazy about each other but he is a violent gang member and she is a police officer...
Leah and Miles are in a fledgling relationship and have just moved in together because of an unplanned pregnancy...
Ruby (Charlie's daughter) and Casey (Brax's brother) are high school students and have just broken up; he has dropped out of school and burned down the house of the rival gang's leader...
Heath (Brax's brother) and Bianca are flirting with each other and have a history - they slept together when she was on a break from her relationship with Liam, but she has since been raped (a crime for which Heath was briefly a suspect) and is now understandably wary of men and relationships...

I could go on: is this what you want your 10 yr old thinking about in relation to relationships?? Interesting homework but possibly shows the teacher is a little out of touch with regard to soap relationships!

TeamDamon · 02/11/2011 16:25

mpsw - if the below is 'less gritty' than British soaps, I'm glad I don't watch any of those!

southeastastra · 02/11/2011 16:27

just let them listen to the archers

NotaDisneyMum · 02/11/2011 16:28

Clawdy - originally, it was through circumstance (my exH stripped the house and took the TV) and then it just wasn't important so it was never replaced!

DD watches TV at her Dads, but not here - and doesn't really miss it tbh - she's always got her head in a book!

I don't want her singled out at school - so am happy to find a soap episode online; I just have no idea whats available or suitable!

Omg teamdamon, really?!? Perhaps a different approach, then!

Home and Away was always grittier than Neighbours.

Neighbours is the one to go for imo.

My ds had similar homework at that age. He did watch some childrens programmes. We got him to write about one of them and wrote a note to the teacher explaining that our house was a soap free zone.

Doctors (on BBC in the day) always seems quite benign - I would have thought it's on iplayer.
