At what point should I speak to the Head?

My DS started in Year 2 in September. He is doing well in school, but has started to make comments about numeracy being too easy. I have noticed that that he can more or less do his numeracy homework with his eyes shut and I have asked his teacher a number of times to give him something a little more challenging.

Over the last 2 weeks, he has complained to me that they were learning to tell the time and doing quarter past and quarter to the hour. He has been able to tell the time since he was 5 and can also tell you the difference between different times. He has also been doing 10 and 5 times tables this week, which he already knows aswell as 2's. He knows all his 3D shapes, understands the pattern with 100's, tens and units, aswell as doing number bonds adding 100's, tens and units. He is also quite good with fractions. His teacher is still asking him to learn how to add and take away 3 and 4, as well as double numbers.

He is getting very frustrated at the lack of challenging work and has started to complain even more to me at home. As I say, I have spoken to his teacher on a number of occasions, but very little seems to have changed.

I don't want to come across as being a pushy Mum, but I don't want my DS to lose his love and interest in numeracy.

Do you think it is now at a stage where I should approach the Head?

Thanks

Definitely speak to the Head. You have given the teacher the chance to respond and she/he has not taken this up. Your son needs more challenge in his learning and you need to make the Head aware of this as the teacher has not responded to your concerns. Let us know how you get on.

I would say hang back for a bit longer, the teacher will have been re-inforcing concepts in the first few weeks rather than moving straight onto calculus.

I'm at a Guv's meeting at the school today, so I am going to mention it to the Head. Not in terms of a complaint or anything, just some ideas from her to ensure he is challenged and doesn't get bored.

Be advised that the Head will probably side with the teacher and they will turn it around and blame your child for not demonstrating what he is capable of doing within lessons.
