Homework: Tips needed from parents with older kids. Ds resistant (and possible dyslexic)

Ds has just started reception, I want to help him with his letters / numbers at home but he's quite resistant. I'd like to set off on the right foot so does anyone have any hard earned tips to help me?

It's complicated by the fact that his FAB teacher has already mentioned that he thinks Ds might be dyslexic.......so Ds is quite defensive about learning letters / numbers already. I don't want to make this worse, but I think he's going to struggle more if we don't support him at home too.

I'd tried the sparklebox Web site and printed off a bingo game. That was great but ds only wanted to play it once.

We read everyday but he has no interest in looking at the words.......

I just really don't want to fuck it up in the first year and make homework a battle.

any help please?

One of my sons has a bit of a history with developmental delays and letters was one of the things he struggled with. If I compare him with his siblings I'd say he has massively struggled to learn letters and numbers but got there in the end with a lot of dedication! The key with him has been making it fun, his favourite character is CARS and we got a lot of CARS books with all sorts of fun letter games in it. Also lots of computer games, magnetic letters, etc...

The key is to keep calm and little and often (a little every day or every other day).

It wasn't so hard for me as he was very delayed with everything else (walking, talking, eating, sleeping) so I was expecting this to happen and was prepared!

am confused that he has just started reception, and teacher has said possibly dyslexic????!!

They can't test that until around 8.

Leave him be and let him mature a bit. read stories to him.

Start worrying maybe (but just a bit) when he's 6-7?
