TIMES TABLES help me help dd!

dd is 8 and in p4 and has brought a sheet home to learn her times tables, any tips on how to help her? Any websites or ipad apps?

P4 = year 3? Which X tables? Which ones can she already do?

Yeah i think so, she can do, 0, 1, 2, 5 & 10 and some of 3! She got a sent home sheet with the all the tables upto 10 and a scribbled note in her diary about learning them ?!

Is she really secure with 2, 5 and 10? can she do them randomly, backwards, related division facts?

If she can, do 3's next; a CD may help. Remember to practice 1x3=3, 2x3=6, 3x3=... and not just counting in 3's. Write them out together if she is a visual learner as well as practicing them orally. And do a few at a time, say up to 15 to start with. Point out to her that if she knows that 3x5=15 and 3x10=30 then she already knows some of them already.

Oh, and regular, short bursts of practice.

Percy Parker tables. Can buy on iTunes. Brilliant, catchy - 3x pretty much learnt in one evening by ds of very average mathematical ability.
Have tried ELC CDs before - duller than dull I'm afraid!

+1 on Timez Attack! I use it in my class all the time (Y4) and the children love it. As I recall you have to hunt about on the website a bit to find the free version, but it is there. I've got the paid-for version which is fantastic, but quite expensive.

Timez Attack!
My son (P2) is addicted to it, and begs to play (he knows 2, 5, 10 and most of 3 and 4). The other day he looked at the multiplication square and said "I got to learn 3x6 or I won't be able to pass this level!"
I bought the paid-for version, and it was such a good investment! My daughter (P5, she knows her tables well) confessed that she learned her 6x and 7x with Timez Attack, not at school.

I teach it by first getting the child to know the 2,3, 5 and 10x the table you are learning. e.g 2x5, 3x5, 5x5, 10x5. Learn these inside out first.

Then practise doubling the 2x to find the 4x then double again for the 8x. (e.g. 2x5=10 doubled is 4x5=20 doubled is 8x5=40)

Double the 3x number to find the 6x number (e.g. 3x5=15 doubled is 6x5=30)

Take away one multiple from the 10 for the 9 (10x5=50-5=45)

Learn the 7x number.

Learn the table in this order and it will stick.

Hit the Button is a nice little activity for learning tables (and loads of other number facts too.)

If your DD likes video games - I would strongly recommend Tux of Math Command. It's free (open source education software) and is based on the old video game Asteroids. The maths problems come down the screen and when you type the correct answer they are blown away (very satisfying).

It can be set at level (easy to hard) and you can select what skills to work on - anything from addition to algebra.

My child's school are part of this website www.mathletics.co.uk It is brilliant, it has the times tables there, but in a fun and funky way. The child gets points for every task they do, the points can then be used to "buy" stuff (like a hat, clothes ect) for their character. They can play on their own, against the computer or against other children from other schools.

I do think that school have to sign them up though (not sure)... but you could always check and see if they already have it at yours school...

Just a quick point, even though knowing the answer is the main thing.

when teaching multiplication it's
2X5 2x6 2x7 etc (2 times table)
5x3 5x9 5x2 (5 times table) not the other way 3x5 2x5

A lot of web-sites even educational ones have this incorrect.
Think of it as 2 groups of 5
2 groups of 6

It makes a difference if someone has to show their working out.

My main tip is never think when your child knows a table that its done and dusted. You think its a slog getting them to learn one but if you then stop practicing they WILL forget it - keep on practicing the learnt ones really regularly - for ages...

simpleoleme - does it matter, as long as you stick to one way of teaching, thinking and don't mix them up. I found American websites/songs teach 2x5, 2x6 which I find confusing if I am used to 5x2, 6x2 (arms, 2 pence pieces etc).

Camicaze is so right, my son forgot all his over the holidays! Was quicker to re-learn though than learn for first time.

We like the Percy Parker CD here. It's not the whole answer, but helps reinforce and helps them understand, I think.

Hi ClaimedbyMe - this is for FlyingPirates but may be of help to others reading.

Tux of Math Command. Open the game on your screen and you should get the main menu and some tense music.

Select PLAY ALONE
Select MATH COMMAND TRAINING ACADEMY
You'll get a list of addition/ subtraction options

On the bottom right you will see a right and left arrow

If you select the right arrow - you'll get the next list of maths problems

you'll see MULTIPLES OF 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc...

This is the multiplication tables. Select the number you want to practice.

Use the arrows on the bottom right to scroll through the maths options - you'll see there is lots more. Simple division, fractions, etc....
