DS is in Y1 (about to do tests for some sort of SEN) and today came out of school with his trousers on inside out - they had PE just after lunch and not a single person picked him up on it, it was unmissable, his trouser pockets looked like bloody elephant ears.

He's absolutely fine getting dressed at home but struggles at school for some reason (rushed maybe?), his sweatshirt is usually on back to front by the time I pick him up, he's sorted himself out when I've collected him and I've just ignored it, but the trousers have really annoyed me.

I'm not sure whether to bring it up with his teacher as I know he should be able to manage this on his own and the teacher is obviously busy, but surely if they're wanting to test him for SEN they need to be prepared to guide him a bit more? Bit worried that kids might start picking on him soon TBH.

When my son left primary they found 2 pairs of trousers he had left behind ...

Fairenuff · 22/09/2011 21:02

Also, something to bear in mind, does he usually dress himself for school in the morning or do you dress him? The more practise he gets, the more proficient he will be.

LynetteScavo · 22/09/2011 21:09

How long does it take him to get dressed in the morning?

The class may well not have a TA with them for PE in Y1. I expect one boy with his trousers on inside out was the least of the teachers problems when she was trying to get 30 five year olds changed and on to the next activity.

I don't think you should say anything to the teacher. I think you should try and get your DS to realise his trousers have a right way and a wrong way. He probably has no idea as in the morning they will always be the right way round.

dannyblanchflower · 22/09/2011 21:11

Last year I had a pair of (unnamed Wink ) trousers left over after a PE lesson in Reception. Everyone else was dressed and we never found the owner!

TheFlyingOnion · 22/09/2011 21:17

why oh why don't parents name the uniform any more?

We now have to go by smell. Its actually quite reliable... Smile

Op I think you are over thinking this amist some anxiety about possible sn, but belive me your ds probably does not stick out like a sore thumb to the other parents or children, honestly. my dd is in a class full of quirky kids for the pure fact they are mostly 5 or 6 and no one, amongst parents nor children would have the slightest idea of any possible odd quirks or SN they are all too busy with their own dcs at drop off and pick up time.

I think dressing mishaps are very comon still at y1 and no indication to anyone else of any SN your ds may or may not have. my dd goes into school very pristine and comes out like she has been involved in some serious masacaring through out the day. I notice and cringe as she comes stroling out cardi coat and bag dragging behind her, she had every button the wrong way after pe the other day, all the other girls come out in the same pristine condition they were sent in.

obviously spares incase of accident at school danny so I would have thought no poor 4 yr old walking home in his keks god forbid, Grin

rebl · 22/09/2011 21:47

Grin @ mrz

Both my 2 have come out of school with their entire uniform on back to front, inside out or both. As long as they're decent I see no problem with it. At least you know he did p.e. that day and gives you something to talk about instead of the normal "don't know / nothing" replies.

DiscoDaisy · 22/09/2011 21:56

TheFlying Onion My youngest lost his named jumper the other day. When I spoke to his TA she said that alot of the time they match lost uniform with a child through smell although she did say that she didn't know everybody's smell yet!
I had to point out that my child doesn't have a smell as I use Surcare because of ezcema in the family.
My child is now known as the child with no smell! Grin

spanieleyes · 22/09/2011 21:59

I found a pair of socks in the class yesterday after everyone had left. Not really that unusual-except I teach year 6. You would think one of them would have noticed they didn't have socks on!

whenIgetto3 · 22/09/2011 22:17

flyingonion so when I name my DSs clothes thwice (yes I am parent with OCD) why then can the teacher not return them to him? He lost his jumper last year for 6 weeks, eventually it appeared one morning on the top of lost property. I have the last laugh though this year DS has left DD inherited his uniform so it is still named (twice) with DSs name, when they find hers I will laugh as they walk round school trying to find DS Grin

Fairenuff · 22/09/2011 22:31

whenIgetto sorry but it's very unlikely they will walk round school looking for the owner of the missing garment. It will be sent to lost property even if it is named. The child or parent can collect from there. There just isn't a member of staff available to do that. Paying a person to return individual items of lost property is not high on the budget in most schools. Grin

whenIgetto3 · 22/09/2011 22:37

Fairenuff we have a great caretaker lady who actively seeks out children to return stuff, she looked constantly last year for DS jumper but it was somewhere even she could not find it (funnily enough it smelt of someone elses washing powder when it appeared in the lost property as my DS has issues with most powders I then had to wash it myself). She is however getting older and I can imagine her wandering around looking for DS. They have a school policy that anything named will get returned to the child and only unnamed stuff goes in lost property. Maybe that is why we get the same reading book several times a year as the library budget is spent on returning property Grin

eaglewings · 22/09/2011 22:44

Wheniget at least the person who took it by mistake washed it.......

Fairenuff · 22/09/2011 22:47

Haha well you can't have everything I guess. I have heard of parents 'borrowing' items they see lying around, it's shocking really.

Btw Redumbdancy sorry for hi-jacking your thread Blush. Back to the inside out issue. My DS in year one once came out of school with everything on backwards and swore blind it was all on correctly. So, we just agreed he had his head on backwards that day Grin

40notTrendy · 22/09/2011 22:52

Ds left school once with everything, and I do mean everything, on back to front. And he once walked 2 miles round a Loch with 2 legs down 1 leghole in his pants. Grin
