Year 1 sums

Just wondering...Is it ok for my Year 1 daughter, when doing sums at school, to draw out dots on her work to help her to count and find the answer? She still struggles with larger numbers in her head and I've told her to do it this way. She's worried about doing it. Is this allowed or should she be showing she can do it without any aid? Thank you.

It's called "visual representation" and is an accepted ( and important) feature of learning maths! I would be more than pleased if a child in my class would draw pictures and jottings to help ( and I teach yr 6!)

Yep, I teach mine (year 2 teacher) to do so! Jottings are actively encouraged! I assume they use something at school to help - blocks, counting teddies etc? Dots are fine

Great thank you. Dd was worried she'd get into trouble x

Tell her 2 teachers say it is ok! Grin

I will. I'm surprised her teacher hasn't already. Poor little things been in tears. Thanks again x
