What does 'tessellating' mean when filling a grid with a certain shape in Maths??!

DS2's Y6 maths homework- he has to pick one of the pentomino shapes (not X or I) and fill a preset grid with (Quote: ) 'a tessellating pattern'.

these are the pentominos - I think the question is number 3, 'Tesselating with pentominos'.

Does it mean 'without any spaces'?

Can't THINK where the teacher lifted his homework from, can you??!Grin

No gaps, AND the pattern must be able to continue indefinitely in all directions

CIMT (centre of innovation in mathematics teaching) is a superb project designed to provide interesting approaches to maths and maths activities. It's them who will have designed the exercise.

You Ds son is very lucky in his maths teacher.

Think of tessellating like creating a tiled floor in a bathroom. You don't want gaps and spaces. They have to fit together without overlapping.

Thanks everyone! Now I can speak with authority!

Lunar - I'm not taking the mick, I don't mind that the teacher uses resources!
