Am I being old-fashioned, or does anyone have their childs feet measured anymore?

Yes, we do.

no because they are always terribly inacurate, I measure dds my self. she has really wide feet and cant get an h fitting so tend to have to try a size up so best to just try a variety of shoe and sizes in this case.

I also know of someone who doesn't and her 10 yo has already had to have surgery on her feet because of it. Fitting yourself is fine if you know what you are doing but if in doubt see a professional.

I would also shop around fitters. Some shops are more accurate than others.

I had 9y DD's feet measured yesterday and got her new fitted school shoes. It was a complete nightmare. She measues a size 3 - f in one footm g int he other, narrowish feet but made wider due to a higher instep. Local indepepndent shop had NO shoes that fir her properly - we normally get everything fitted from there too. Clarks don't fit her at all. Clinkards had one pair that fit properly - HushPuppies at £39, they have different insoles that HP do with their shoes so right one in each, so got them.

DD wears unfitted shoes for parties, trainers, etc. but they never fit very well tbh. For something she is going to wear a lot such as school shoes I prefer fitted.

I find that people are preferring to buy school shoes in supermarkets, rather than standard shoe shops where you can get you childs feet measured. is there really a difference?

We go to the local independent shoe shop to have DD's feet measured and buy her school shoes from there. I may occasionally buy a pair of non school shoes from somewhere like Next but I think it is important to have properly fitted school shoes as they are worn every day. (just my own personal opinion!) Although having said that you still have to be careful about where you get feet measured as I have heard some bad experiences about ill fitting shoes bought from a very well known shoe shop

It also depends on the cut of the shoe. My dd had her feet measured by a Start rite measurer at the weekend, and I printed off the measuring gauge online and also measured her. Both said same fitting. Ordered shoes with this fitting online and have just returned them and ordered the next fitting up.

My DD had hers measured today and I've bought some really nice Startrite t-bar shoes.

She has a wide fitting, so, unfortunately off the rack shoes don't tend to fit her well. I dn't mind if we are buying summer sandals or sneakers, but I want the shoes she will be wearing 5 days a week to be comfortable.

Yes. DS (10) has strange-shaped feet that need careful fitting. As he also needs football boots and spoecialised trainers (only sold in sports shops, where fitting isn't offered in general) I go straight from his main shoe-buying to the sports shop and buy the same size.

I do the same for DD (8) also, though her feet are more standard so she sometimes has more than one pair of fitting shoes to choose from (DS doesn't - he has had the same Startrite Rhino shoe style for 4 years as they are the only ones that fit). Her dance shoes are also carefully fitted by the dancewear shop, as she dances a LOT (6+ hours per week of lessons) and blisters and rubs would be a disaster, .

I always get DD's feet measured for her school shoes. We then use this to buy trainers and casual shoes etc throughout the year.

She too has had the same style shoes for the last 2 years - but as she has quite skinny funny shaped feet with low ankle bones there are not many styles that fit her properly.

As others have said, these are the shoes she will wear most so they have to fit and be comfy!

I am bad at measuring feet by myself. That said, as they get older I can delude myself into thinking I can trust DC to tell me if a shoe fits alright, happy enough to buy some shoes that way.

Yes I do - I like to go to a proper children's shoe department (Russell & Bromley in Tunbridge Wells) because (a) they spend time measuring DD's feet (b) there is a lot of choice of shoe style, size and width.

DD has inherited a potential foot issue from DP so she really needs to wear very good properly fitted shoes while her feet are growing.

If you need H-fitting shoes, Startrite supply them on line and provide an excellent service. Have the child's feet measured first and then order the shoes, Startrite will always exchange them if you return them straight away.

All my children have wide feet with narrow ankles and a high instep. Shoe fitting is a nightmare and if we are very lucky there will be one pair in an entire shop that fits. If I tried to order online I'm sure I'd end up having to send about 6 or 7 back before I found the right fit.

I always get DD's feet measured in an independent shoe shop. They're so narrow (about a C) that there are very few shoes that will fit her anywhere and definitely not any of the widely available brands like Clarks which only seem to come in F & G in her size. Supermarket shoes definitely would not fit and I would worry about her feet.

I do have my children's feet measured but I also get to know what width and shape of shoe will fit so I am not just relying on the measurement and fitting.

eg. My DS has extremely narrow feet - if someone measured him wider than an E, I would know they were wrong and would tell them. Also, his feet are growing a bit more slowly and steadily now (he's 5) so overall I know what size, or small range of sizes to expect. I also know that a deep shoe won't fit him etc.

My DD has normal/slightly narrow feet and again, I know roughly what I am expecting for her, although we have far more choice with shoes for her as she is much closer to having average feet than DS is.

As well, if I find a shoe that is a very nice fit on my kids, I will keep buying the same shoe as they go up the sizes.
