My ds has done no school work all summer

I am starting to feel a bit anxious because, apart from reading, my ds has done NO school stuff all holiday. I had intended to get him to do a bit of writing and maths a few times a week, but it hasn't happened.
He is about to go into year 2.

SingingGirl - oh well done on avoiding the coaching. DD is bright but round here everyone has coaching and I don't want her to be at a disadvantage it's a tough call. She is excellent at literacy and good at maths but overall her maths is weaker. Unfortunately I won't be able to help her as she and I just can't work together Blush - I was exactly the same with my mum - and dh was with his, despite both our mums being teachers!! Your SENCO friend is so right about the coaching thing, it's got way out of hand. I don't know where you are but the problem here is that unless you are a god-fearin' sort or very sporty (neither of which dc are) the other secondary options are not good. Anyway it's a way off now but every year when it comes round I like to have a little fret about it Grin

GB - very similar round here, except there are also some places on musical aptitude, and both of mine are musical. Which I admit may have changed the way I approached things! What I have found with DS1 though, was that when he was going into Year 5 we talked about where he wanted to go, he said the Grammar School, and I explained there were some things he would need to look at. Since it was his decision he was then happy to look at some algebra, and then over the summer to do 10-15 minutes on the different areas to keep himself going. To be honest, what he has done over the summer I have just marked - it has been practice, not teaching. When it comes to the things they need to be shown, your DD might well be amenable to having a go with a Grandma? My DS1 has practised on his own with just a little encouragement since the GS is where thheyhe wants to go. Good luck when it's your turn! I recommend a deep breath and Wine. Now I will have to do it all again with DS2 (two years younger). Gaaaaaaah!

he obviously, not thheyhe Blush

Yes, grandparents might be the way forward (whether they like it or not Wink) The musical thing isn't really an option here which is a shame as dd is quite musical (I also have a younger DS but it's ages away for him).
Also - apologies for the misuse of 'it's' in my post. I have brought shame upon myself and my whole family (who are bright enough for grammar, honest guv ) Blush Grin

my 10 year old taking 11+ in October so have done some work. Each day they choose an article from an online newspaper and read it out loud to me and if we find any new words then we put them in a book. Todays was about a crocodile in a pool so nothing too heavy. After that they pick a flag ( without looking ) from a box which has all the flags of the world in it and then use the computer to find the capital city and population. All of this takes about 15mins but if they are interested in a country like they were in India then they can find out all they want. They really do enjoy this and I trade it for moshi monster time. Not sure if this is the right thing to do but it works for us
