How quickly do children progress in reading in year 2?

Ds1 is starting year 2 in Sept and was reading at his expected level by the end of yr 1 (though I think he's improved over the summer). He was given some Beast Quest books by a friend who said quite casually 'Oh he'll be reading them by Christmas'

Yes, I know all children are different and each progress at different levels but my friend insists that in year 2 most children progress very quickly with their reading. I'm just curious about others views.

Indigobell are you referring to your daughter with the Auditory processing problems? In year 3? Apologies if I have got the name of her diagnosis totally wrong.

Yep. That's right. Her reading is coming on at a tremendous pace, and I'm really pleased, and it continues to improve every day.

But she's still not reading properly even though she can read and comprehend level 2a books IYSWIM.......

Or at least she's not reading as well as I thought she would be by the time she reached the magic '2s'

Indigo - she tends to read all books "in her head" unless she is reading it to me.

Her report said - her reading of simple unfamiliar texts is almost entirely accurate and well paced, taking some account of punctuation. When reading unfamiliar words or symbols she can combine a range of strategies (phonic, graphic, grammatical and contextual) to establish meaning. She can show understanding of texts by commenting on features such as plot, setting, characters and how information is presented.

With regard to the Daisy books - she can read a lot of it herself, but they do tend to contain made up words for things that she definately needs help to read them! She also reads the Rainbow Fairy books quite well herself. Hope that helps

Yep, that helps. Thanks.
