perhaps look at the model in Scandinavia before claiming this article is interesting [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4584175.stm bbc] for those of you going on about the Dutch rates the uk have a 6 times higher rate of teen pregnancy than Holland.. something to think about.

I grew up in Scandinavia I am in my 40s and I knew what the right name for vagina and penis was at age 8 I dont recall not knowing this. I also knew how babies were made and I was still in my late 20's before I had a baby..

Information giving appropriatly and age sensitive doesnt rob children of their innosence.. refusing to give them this basic infomation in my opinion is why the rates are so high.

OP no offense intended but I also think it is the very fact it becomes an issue a 8 year old is told this that makes for the rates thats not a personal attack but please ask your self why this disturbs you so much.. that may be a better question I doubht your child is suffering from knowing this. and well done for raising a child that dares come ask you questions.

"Teaching 6-7-8-9 year olds appropriate technical names for body parts gives them nothing but robbing them of their innocence and is essentially a child abuse on a state level."

Exactly how does teaching them the name for the body parts rob them of their innocence in a way that teaching them of the holocaust and the destruction of the ozone layer does not? Genuinely interested.

How often do we find threads lamenting the fact that 8yos are robbed of their innocence by being taught about war and exploitation? What is this childhood innocence that is only about anatomy?

I wonder if something unexpected happened at school and the teachers had to do a quick talk? You know the sort of thing - some children showing bits in toilets, then teachers talking about not showing private parts, etc.

In my Ds's school they do PHSE and body parts is part of the curriculum in year one. It has nothing to do with sex educaiton and they do not talk about sex or what a penis or vagina is for. They also cover friendships, bullying, good and bad secrets.

The curriculum for PHSE at our school does not go into any detail about 'sex' until year 5/6.

In effect, she has not been having sex education lessons - she has been learning about parts of the body. There is quite a big difference.
