Hi everyone. Have just received my son's first school report, he's in reception class. I am totally confused as to what any of it means. There was no explanation to the scores and as he is my PFB as I have no experience of what is expected at his age. I'm only familiar with SATS levels as I sat them at school myself. Is it a score out of 10? He was given, 6 x 8's, 6 x 9's and 1 x5, total of 107. Won't be able to get into school before the end of term to ask, does anyone have any experience of this method of report? Thanks in advance :)

lulurose, I'm interested that you say that most children enter reception on points3/4/5. Actually, most children enter at about a 3 ( where I teach, many way below this). Points 1-3 are hierarchycal and must be gained in that order, points 4-8 can be gained in any order and point 9 can't be gained unless 1-8 have been achieved.

The average child is expected to achieve a score of 78 out of 117 and this must include 6 points in each area of PSED and CLLD.

The new curriculum is going to be interesting - Dame Tickell did a pretty comprehensive review and as mrz said, she placed great emphasis on school readiness. They are supposed to be slimming down the number of assessments, but I think it's going to end up with things squeezed into fewer but bigger points.

My reception class certainly don't enter on 3/4/5 points usually 1 or 2 sometimes 0 or 3. I think the whole idea of average is dangerous and misinterpreted ... 6 can be a good score but it depends which 6 as Lara says the Personal Social Emotional and Communication aspects are regarded as the most important but these are often areas where SEN children experience the most difficulty.
I think the new EYFS profile is an attempt to "con" teachers and parents with it's 17 points when in fact everything in the previous profile is squeezed into those 17 along with the three Es...Hmm

Interesting that they're now going to put a higher emphasis on PD.......

Dame Clare says: ?I am clear that reception class should remain part of the EYFS ? children in reception class are still very young, some only just 4-years-old, and there should continue to be a strong focus on supporting their development in the prime as well as the specific areas through play-based approaches. However, I think that children?s experiences in reception class should help prepare them for the move to Year 1, both in terms of the level of development most children should have reached, and in the knowledge that most children would be expected to have.

Skilled teachers and practitioners should be attuned to each child?s level of development, to their pace of learning, and to their abilities and interests ? and should determine the most effective approach to interacting with children to guide their development. Therefore, I recommend that the EYFS requirement relating to delivery through play is clarified, including emphasising that this does not preclude more adult direction or teaching, and by setting out what playful adult-directed learning looks like.?

Hmm
