Just had DD's end of Y1 report can anyone decipher it for me?

She's got overall 1A for Numeracy, and 1A for Literacy (and for each subheading: reading, writing etc). The only thing is, I've no idea what that means as the covering key doesn't seem to explain it - either that or I'm being dim (quite possible).

Is this round about where she should be? Of course, it's been given out on a Friday and there's no chance to ask about until Monday (and there's no parent's evening) and I might actually burst unless someone can translate for me.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks karma. I was a bit Hmm when I read it, but that's definitely what it said!

Any chance the Gods of Assessments could amend this to:
Below average
Average
Slightly above average
Shit hot.

Magicmummy I have no idea why they have said those levels. Confused

I would love to level a child as 'shit hot'Grin

BrainSurgeon · 15/07/2011 17:58

OMG this system sounds like a bloody nightmare hope they change it by the time DS gets to year 1!

magicmummy1 · 15/07/2011 18:00

I guess it will always remain a mystery!!

I would love a teacher to level my child as shit-hot!!

I did wonder about the 'Level 3' thing. Is it because there's such a change in pace between Yr2(KS1) and Yr3(KS2) that without them actually doing it you can't accurately quantify it?

karma22 · 15/07/2011 18:19

You can get a level 3 in year 2. There is definitely a maturity issue to a level 3. Especially if the child is changing from first to junior school.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 15/07/2011 18:32

Oh I know you can get them (DD did) it's the lack of sub levels (I don't care that much tbh, I'm chuffed she did well, it's just curiosity reignited by BeansGloriousBeans post)

Children are no longer awarded a 3c in the Yr2 SAT, they have to be a 3b or a solid level 3. However, at my school teachers do teacher assess and level at 3c.
At my DC's school, they have been known to give levels that try to describe where a child is within a sub-level, such as a 3cc (just a 3c) or 2AA (nearly a 3c). Crazy I know - I barely understand and I am a teacher.

AngryFeet · 15/07/2011 20:36

They broke this down in our report saying exactly what is expected in what level. The letters just mean:-

C - achieving some aspects of this level
B - achieving most aspects of this level
A - achieving all aspects of this level

letthembe · 15/07/2011 20:49

The reports I sent home stated the level expected nationally and then the level we expect in our school, highlighting that the standards are above national expectancy.
