Working Mums - What's your daily commute?

Hi,

I'm just being nosey & wanted to find out what the daily commute is for the working mums who have children at infant/junior schools.

I'm about to commit myself to 1hr commute each way and just wanted to compare notes really.

TIA

Half an hour via the creche.

I work at home. Occasionally a meeting in London or elsewhere but nearly always from home. Means I can work more hours during school time.

I travel an hour each way into central London every day. DS1 is starting in reception in September. At the moment I drop DCs off at nursery at 8 on the days when DH is working too (shift work, so sometimes in the week he's at home) and then get a train around 8.30.
We are lucky with DS1's school as it has a breakfast club and an after-school club, so we will be using both of these come September on the days when nobody else is available. Both sets of grandparents live close by and have promised to help out when they can, although all grandparents still work full-time so it won't be that much.
I really like the journey as it's quiet, clean and comfortable, so 2 hours of "me" time which I wouldn't like to give up for a job closer to home.

hour each way. Every day. Hate it. Especially if the tubes misbehave. Then I have to rush to get to nursery on time for pick up.

So much for buying all those tickets for the Euro millions, sigh :(

15 mins each way (used to be 30 mins each way when I included a nursery drop off/pick up). Now have SAHD, so 15 mins peace and quiet at start and end of working day Wink

I am lucky - I live 3 miles from work. My eldest 2 go to the secondary school at the end of the road so they walk to and fro independently. My youngest is still at primary and isn't to wait for the bell without me so I have to drive there still. Very simple these days.

Used to be a nightmare. At one point I had to drop 3 DC at 3 different places - school, CM and nursery! And I was working part-time so had to rush like mad to get back to pick them up at the end of the day. DH was also working long long hours so was fairly useless. If ever I start to feel fed up and tired I look back at how things were 6 or 7 years ago and count my blessings!

An hour each way in the car. Come September, I will be doing 10am - 2pm Monday to Wednesday, and 10am - 5pm Thursday and Friday. Mum has them on a Thursday and Friday.

magicmummy1 · 14/07/2011 19:26

5 minute walk to school, then ten minute walk from school to office. But then we did choose our house on the basis of it's proximity to a great school near my place of work! :)

After morning school run about 30 minutes by car, a little longer on the way back to school in the late afternoon/evening.

shelscrape · 14/07/2011 23:33

Until recently I was driving 1 hour 30 mins each way. I relied very heavily on DS's school breakfast club and afterschool club and a DH who only had a 25 minute each way commute.

Mandy21 · 15/07/2011 08:49

I have a 1.5 hour drive each way but I only work 3 days. I leave v early (about 6.15am) so my husband gets the children up and ready on the days that I work and does the nursery / school run. He works 20 mins from school so he can still be at work for about 9.20ish. I leave at 4pm which means I'm back by about 5.30pm. My children go to after school club on 2 days and my husband works late all week so he can finish early on a Friday to collect them.

We've got it down to a fine art now but means I spend at least 30 mins the night before my work days laying out the clothes for the children, making sure they have book bags / PE kits or whatever!

Over the last 2.5 years mine has been 3.5 miles or about 10-15 minutes by car.

Before that it was about 1h15m each way. Was by car and mainly motorway. I worked PT which made it more manageable, but if I am honest it wasn't ideal and made my working day 2.5 hour slonger than it should have been - 2.5 hours I could have done without having to waste sat in a car. Before we had DD I did it every day, sometimes a bit longer.

I would hate to return to the long commute now. I don't miss having to be up at 6am for work.

Confusedmummy07 - DD is in private school.

She is only 5 so too young for playing out alone imo.

She mixes with local girls at rainbows which is walking distance away.

One classmate lives just up the road and a couple more from her school also live walking distance away.

Wouldn't work if you tend to move jobs frequently but works for us.
