my dd has just done some assessment papers, she is at the end of reception year. Teachers wont discuss the scores but said that she has done very well. all i know are papers are English and maths, and last about 10 mins.

can anyone shed some light on firstly where to find a copy of these papers? how important they are? and how many questions each paper has?

just want to know how dd is doing really.

any help appreciated.

Could be anything. Teachers are constantly assessing the children so they know where they're at. It's just all part of it. So they can teach effectively.
You know, from what the teacher said that your DD is doing well.
Did your DD have to read the questions? And write the answers? - if so she really is doing well.

Papers is reception! Not a clue and I must confess that does sound a little odd. Is it state or private?

AbigailS · 01/07/2011 22:35

Papers in reception. Blush. Too much Wine it's been a tough week!

paisely- no teachers read out question then children fill in gap on their answer sheet.

abigails- its private, but surely state school asess children too before they go on to year 1.

State school's assess by ongoing observation in Reception. It seems very odd to make them do a "written paper". Certainly in DD's Reception class a majority of children would struggle to write answers to verbal questions.

redskyatnight · 02/07/2011 10:23

State schools (no apostrophe) - sigh...

mrz · 02/07/2011 10:37

Sounds like it might be PIPs

fivegomadindorset · 02/07/2011 10:39

Not DD's state school.

mrz · 02/07/2011 10:43

Children in state school reception classes are continually assessed but not tested

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 10:47

+*Our5 reception have just done some minitests in formal-looking booklets.
One reading, one maths. Seemed to be a lot of Teacher read the question, child ring or match the picture to the answer. Counting and arithmetic skills, cvc and simple sentences. Only caught a glimpse, it's not my end of school.
Like a simpler version of the Y2 tests.
Sad

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 10:48

We're state

Elibean · 02/07/2011 10:50

Goblin and OP Shock

Tests in Reception? Not in our school. Continual assessment.

mrz · 02/07/2011 10:52

Sounds more and more like PIPs (Ofsted love them because they make pretty graphs of progress) Hmm

coccyx · 02/07/2011 10:54

Sounds awful. Teachers assess them all the time surely???

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 10:59

They seem to do continuous assessment continuously, with a lot of photographic evidence and note-taking whilst the children are playing and doing activities.

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 11:00

Have you got a handy link for PIPS, mrz?
I don't know what they are. Smile

Elibean · 02/07/2011 11:07

Small hard things that get in the way of enjoying a fruit Wink

Elibean · 02/07/2011 11:08

This would be a good time to ask Blush how to do those crossed-out words on MN - I wanted to 'cross-out' 'fruit' and write 'time in Reception' but didn't know how.

mrz · 02/07/2011 11:09

www.cemcentre.org/pips-ks1-baseline/introduction

It could be done as a paper exercise or on line

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 11:17

Thank you mrz. Smile

Goblinchild · 02/07/2011 11:19

Elibean, you put a double hyphen -- on each side of the word you want to strike out.

testing testing

Elibean · 02/07/2011 12:44

Thank you Smile

crystal07 · 02/07/2011 17:56

goblinchild- thats sounds exactly like what the teacher described.
