How do I do this question Blush I'm having a dullard moment.
Fred counts his models in groups of 5 and has 1 left over.
He then counts them in groups of 3 and also has one left over, how many does he have?

16, or 31, or 46

You're looking for a multiple of 3 and 5 and adding one.

LidlPrincess · 21/06/2011 17:32

16? lol

lovecheese · 21/06/2011 17:33

What meditrina said. All possible answers must end in 1 or 6, ad nauseum.

IslaValargeone · 21/06/2011 17:36

How do I explain the method to a 9 year old, when I can't get it myself?

Demonstrate with sweets. And eat them! Helps enormously with several mathematical concepts Grin.

You're looking for numbers which divide by 3 and 5, then adding one to the answer as the "remainder".

My DD is doing this ATM tooGrin

Doh! What a knob, I just wasn't seeing it, thankyou.

Depending on the year group I would probably go with 3 X 5 + 1 as the answer (although there are lots of alternatives as meditrina pointed out)
