If it is orange related to the book band system, it is approximately an early Y2 book which means working in level 2.
Book bands are as follows:
pink and red (YR)
yellow, blue & green (Y1)
orange, turquoise, purple, gold, white - can't remember after that off top of head (Y2)
These are an approximation and some guided reading books colours may not follow the book banding scheme as such.

thanks for that mum2be79

i am a priamry teacher - if you give me an example of what is on a page i can give you an approx age/year group/book band

nowayhosay · 10/06/2011 18:38

Example:

"No", said Mum, "but we're going to look for one now. We have to go to the R.S.P.C.A."
"What's that?" Carol asked.
"It's the striped cat shop," said Andrew.
"Not quite," said Mum. "It's the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The people there sometimes look after stray animals. There are some kittens at our local branch. If we go now, we can look at the kittens and maybe choose one."

It is orange book band so level 6. It's approx NC level 1b/a so Y1 not Y2.

mycatoscar · 10/06/2011 18:57

yep sounds about right mrz

maizieD · 10/06/2011 23:53

Blimey, I've got Y7s who couldn't read that...

IndigoBell · 11/06/2011 07:04

Maizie - :(. Do you mean kids starting Y7, or kids who are almost at the end of Y7?

mrz · 11/06/2011 08:39

Blimey, Maizie I expect most of my reception to read that ...

coccyx · 11/06/2011 09:29

year 7?????? surely not

nowayhosay · 12/06/2011 19:37

Are you sure about this? He's been on level 10 / 11 all term so strange to go backwards to a level 6 unless there's something they particularly want him to concentrate on. It's a very old book so maybe the levels have changed or something Confused

Just rethought this and just because it is an orange coloured book it doesnt neccesarily mean it is an orange book band book. Alot of our new way books are way way older than the book band system.

If it is a similar difficulty level to the others he has been reading then I would guess it's been banded to be in that level. If he has found it far too easy then speak to the teacher

nowayhosay · 13/06/2011 09:33

Back cover: what looks like playing cards in different colours fanned out with last one orange

does this help?

mrz · 13/06/2011 18:10

The book is definitely listed in the Book Banding lists as being orange level

seeker · 13/06/2011 18:14

Just read the book and send it back. It honestlly doesn't matter!

tinytalker · 13/06/2011 18:26

Just what I was thinking seeker! Hmm

fairydoll · 13/06/2011 18:44

I don't think the new way books follow the book band colours though do they.eg White level is the lowest

mrz · 13/06/2011 19:00

The Book Banding for guided reading publication (Institute of Education) lists all published schemes and many non scheme books into reading bands - the book is orange band

New Way Series: A Cat Called Tim Orange Level by Ann Oates, David Dowland and Joyce Smith

mycatoscar · 14/06/2011 07:42

agree with whoever said to read it and send it back. If your son found it way too easy then write that in his reading record.
