Half-term homework - what have your DC been set?

Silly me, there I was thinking how lovely to have a week off and planning play dates and days out. Then I looked in their book bags.

My DD (9) has to look at Shakespeare's work so we borrowed the box set of Shakespeare for children from a friend. So far she's read Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra, As you Like It, and Othello. Don't think she's hooked "All he writes about is love, and one person dies then someone else kills themself" Smile

My DS (6) has to write about a fictitious town shown on a given map i.e name the road where the swimming pool is etc. Not bad. But then he has to look at a guide book for a town local to his school and write about it, groan.

gordongb I think that is a fantastic idea.
What about Formula 1 - does he like fast cars?

seeing as half term is a total of one day (this Thursday) there will be trouble if there is additional homework (to the amount already set..)

Mind you they get 10 weeks for summer so I shouldn't complain (much)

Nothing for DS (yr1)

I have taken him to the library today so he can choose some new books he wants to read with me though Smile

TBH he loves doing homework Hmm and is always asking me to set him some project or other...

mrsjohnsimm · 31/05/2011 16:39

DS (Y1) has a scavenger hunt list of things to find (leaves, pine needles, shells, pebbles, that sort of thing) and is supposed to make a collage with them. And he has some handwriting sheets to do (although based on prior experience Blush the school aren't fussed if those don't come back).

Snowie - I can't BELIEVE that a Yr R child has that much! My DTDs are in Yr R. They have one reading book - which is what they get every day anyway.

I don't think DCs should be overloaded with homework in the holidays. My girls have been in Scotland with DH and their GPs, and have learned and done loads, but none of it was "school" work. Far nicer for them to have time to learn about things with us than to be stuck for two or three afternoons doing homework.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 31/05/2011 18:38

DD yr R has none! DS yr 3 has craft homework, they are to make a piece of paper look old and decorate a shoebox "in a Tudor" style! No surprises about next half terms topic then.

LawrieMarlow · 31/05/2011 19:51

DS in year 2 has a sheet about money to do. And also reading.

DD in reception doesn't have anything other than reading.

choirmum · 31/05/2011 19:57

Mine both have revision to do for school exams next week (Yr 7 and 4) but no homework as such to be submitted. Important exams for DS (Yr 7) as he moves on from prep school next summer so these will give us an idea where to send him next.

FionaJT · 31/05/2011 20:21

DD in yr 1 has been given a set of postcard templates for each day of the week (Mon-Fri), to do a picture on one side and a message on the other about what she does each day. I think it's rather fun and she's pretty enthusiatic. Plus usual reading.

Hulababy · 31/05/2011 20:25

9y DD (Y4) - a bit of English and French revision as she has tests when she goes back. Nothing formally set. So, she will practise the spellings from her book and she did a bit of writing the other day for me, so we can do some recap on punctuation.

TBH we don't have a great deal of spare time planned anyway - concert yesterday, festival Friday-Sunday, climbing tomorrow, plus playing with friends.

ds3 (Y8) has end of year exams next week and school have given him a revision timetable for 2 x 40 minute slots each morning and afternoon for every day of the holiday.

he's sticking with it so far albeit the 40 minute slots are around 10 minutes but hey, its more than ds1 is doing for his As exams

SocietyClowns · 31/05/2011 20:41

dd is in nursery... her homework for half term is to make a sock animal Hmm. I have no arty crafty skills at all and I am not going to let a three year old loose with a needle and thread (the only way to get ANYTHING to stick to an old ski sock...) Sad And why did she decide only an elephant will do? I have yet to create a trunk that does not look phallic Grin

issynoko · 31/05/2011 20:45

Just their usual reading books (Year 1 and Year 2).

mungogerry · 31/05/2011 22:15

Sarah - THANK YOU we have printed that on thick paper and DD can't wait to get stuck in tomorrow :-)

Boo - the idea crossed my mind too lol - I hope not or there may be some wee dears needing counselling lol!

sarahfreck · 31/05/2011 22:50

It is actually quite tricky to do A4 size Mungogerry. I'd recommend taking another photocopy/printout so you can see the instructions clearly and refer to them even when the original has been cut and have an adult study it and work out which bits go where before doing any cutting. One of the long bits is an inner wall showing the balconies the audience sat in ( took me a while to work that out)!
Enlarged to A3 would be more advisable I think if you can manage it!

What about cutting some tissue paper flames to be stuck to the houses etc when the appropriate moment comes at school!!!

mungogerry · 31/05/2011 23:01

The school can print in A3, so I guess I an ask a favour after half-term. Thanks.

I think they will just be using the houses to illustrate how their proximity within the street layout, coupled with a dry May and the houses buidling materials enabled the fire to spread so rapidly. If a reenactment is looking likely I will suggest the tissue flames!

treas · 01/06/2011 12:45

Design a school uniform using only recycled materials.

noid · 01/06/2011 13:12

two reading books (YR) but he visited a fire station this morning so I got him to write a thank you letter. And got him to read me the recipe yesterday while we were cooking :o

Elibean · 01/06/2011 16:47

A couple of very easy literacy worksheets, and a non-chronological report (dd had to explain what that was Blush) if they feel like doing it, but note alongside to say specifically no pressure as they have done most of their SATS and been working very hard these past few weeks.

Reading as always.
