When can my summer born 4yr old start school full time? Has it changed?

ds will be 4 in August and start in September - I remember we had to pay to top up sessions for his older sibling, also a summer baby, so he didn't have to come home at lunch times until January. Has the policy now changed so that children can go full time from September no matter when in the year they were born?

Thanks in advance - he is so ready for school, it would be great for us both if he has the option to go full time from Sept without it costing me a fortune!

Erm...you should have applied quite a while ago, carlywurly, if you are talking about state primary school.

In Surrey where I live, the parents are given the choice whether to send their child full time or part time from September whether they are summer born or not. I'm not sure whether this is the case for the entire country.

It has changed from this Sept & now all schools have to allow full time from Sept if that's what parents want.

To save me C&Ping all the details are on this thread

depends on the school. In our school, they divide the year up into older and younger and they go in gradually - there's no option of paying for them to go full time. No doubt your school will be having a new parents' evening at some point soon to explain

lovecheese, it's ok, I did apply! He's there already in nursery and has got a place for reception. I keep meaning to ask school about the policy but knew someone on here would know!

Thanks all, and betsy for the link, that's really useful to know - will look now.

Mine is 4 in august and she is starting full time school in september. She will be the youngest of the class.
She has got her place and I applied for it last year. I wasn't given the choice of half days or full days it was jus full time.

In our area - Sheffield - it has changed for this coming academic year.
Although parents have applied for the ear's intake the deadline for chososing when they start and if FT or PT has either only just passed or about to pass.

Round here, from what I can gather, parents have a choice to make of what to do untilt he term after the child turns 5y. The term after they are 5y they go FT.

Until then though they can go FT or PT. Schools decide what PT is, in our case it is mornings only, five days a week IIRR. They then decide on when they are starting, as in which term. Those who are 5y in the final term can skip reception enitrley (as they can now anyway) but they will go into Y1 after that.

My August born DD started full-time school in the September, 2 weeks after her 4th birthday. She loved it but she was pretty tired by the end of each day.

galois · 25/05/2011 19:00

you had to pay for him to be ft as opposed to pt???? And this was a state school?

My socks.

carlywurly · 26/05/2011 18:27

Yes, we paid fees in a state school. It worked out at £25 per week for the autumn term, which is why I'd be quite happy to avoid paying it this time!

carlywurly Shock is that actually legal Shock

TheOriginalFAB · 26/05/2011 20:42

Normally the younger children don't go full time until half term or January. You don't get a choice and can't pay to send them full time.

LowLevelWhiiingeing · 26/05/2011 21:28

They all go fulltime from september here (north west). No payments.
