Hi - Can anyone recommend (or otherwise) this maths web site? Have an 8 year old DS who needs some maths motivation and general help in improving his numeracy skills. This site looks interesting. Any advice recommended.

We used it for DS for a while. Not entirely sure it was worth it. Found it hard to motivate him to use it tbh.

Others have said it is good though. Obv have children who will do as they are told! DS had to be nagged a lot to go on.

Thanks Buda. What appealed to me about this web site was the "moshi monsters" type general look of the web site which my DS adores - I felt this would be one way of inducing him to do some maths in a fun way!

I'm interested in mathswhizz too.
I've also been recommended mathletics by a friend, but doing resreach on here seems mathswhizz is better . I ahv a nine yr old DS who needs a lot of the time a Kick up ... iykwim!
He's rather lazy and has underachieved right through school so far so i am contemplating introducing this , obviously with lots of incentives !

dustwatdust - (great name!) Thanks, Your DS sounds like he could be related to mine! My lad is a lazy so-and-so! Has the ability but just could not be bothered. Tearing my hair out trying to make sure he "keeps up" with the class as it breaks my heart to see him not achieve what I know he can. I have been trying to do some rote learning of times tables at home myself which he absolutely hates. Like other posters I think knowing your times tables is the foundation to getting on in maths and I'm a bit shocked at how poor his tables are in general. From what I've seen of this site so far it looks fun and very interactive and might actually make him like and understand his maths.

I'm a great fan of Whizz. It is one of the best programs for actually teaching the ,concepts. It also covers the whole range of the curriculum. I have written lots of comments about the programme on mums net and it might be worth doing a search.

Mathletics is also a great site for practice and is great value but it doesn't teach as well as Whizz but there is a huge difference in price.

Both packages are great but not comparable

Thanks RoadArt - I've actually read some of your previous very knowledgable posts on MN and delighted you've replied here.

Have a quick peek at mathsinsider.com. There are a lot of great tips on there and lots of info on lots of maths sites.

Another mner who gives maths whizz a thumbs up. My dd started using it in September as she lacked confidence with her maths (Y2). She has really improved since using maths whizz and more importantly it explains concepts which perhaps she didn't understand at school.
We did do it twice a week but probably only do it once now. We paid for the monthly subscription first to see if she would enjoy it and have now paid for an annual one as it is much cheaper.

Another mathswhizzer here, my dd year 4 loves it. We did mathletics for a while but found whizz better as it has the tutorials.

Thanks Ladies for all your recommendations, especially Roadart for all the extra help! We're going to go with Maths Whizz for the 1 month firstly and see how it goes. Feel relieved and fingers crossed that my DS will benefit overall. Hes in UK YR 3 now (I'm in Ireland, we call this year 2nd Class) and next year is a big leap in terms of what they cover on the curriculum, so hoping to have him primed up over the Summer - poor chap! Regards and thanks to all Smile
