Can anyone tell me what the standard history topics are in year 4?

It seems that all schools do the same history topics each year (fire of London, guy fawkes, romans/egyptians etc).

Can anyone give me a sneak preview of year 4?

dd did Tudors

suwoo · 25/05/2011 10:48

Tudors.

snice · 25/05/2011 10:50

Tudors-DD just done Henry VIII and his wives which is quite difficult to explain properly without defining adultery

Bunbaker · 25/05/2011 11:02

DD did Tudors as well. I have a feeling they did the Vikings also.

Tiggles · 25/05/2011 12:00

DS is in a mixed yr3/4 class so one year they do Tudors, the other year they do Romans.

WoodRose · 25/05/2011 12:24

DS did the Tudors (mostly Henry VIII and wives) as well as WWII (mostly rationing and evacuation).

Feenie · 25/05/2011 12:29

There isn't a set topic - schools are free to choose which year group does what. Our Y4s do Victorians and Ancient Egypt.

Annelongditton · 25/05/2011 12:43

DS's school have adopted a revolutionary approach and tackle British history in chronological order. Year 4 was the Romans, going on to the Angle Saxons and a bit of the Vikings. Britain pre 1066 in fact.

BoattoBolivia · 25/05/2011 15:35

The is no topic specifically for year 4, the topics people quote can be covered anywhere in KS2, and there are choices eg one non-European Ancient civilisations topic, which could be Egypt, Benin, Aztecs etc.
Many schools are moving away from this approach and going for more abstract topics to cover skills rather than a list of facts.
If you want to know about a particular school, ask them.
history topics

woolleybear · 25/05/2011 16:17

DD's school have Life in Ancient Egypt for their Year 4 history topic this term, not sure about the previous 2.

emptyshell · 25/05/2011 16:43

Used to do Saxons, Vikings and Romans when I taught Y4 last - depends on the school lots and lots.

Mum2be79 · 25/05/2011 20:44

Tudors, WW2 and Egypt. God, how I miss teaching Y4! If they follow the 'old' schemes of work from the QCA it can also be other topics such as Vikings, Romans or Victorians as they can all be generally adapted for specific year groups. But the three I mentioned are what was set down by 'QCA' as Y4 topics. They're brilliant ones too. Y4 is the best year group in KS2 to teach as far as I'm concerned. Loved it!

orangehead · 25/05/2011 20:48

ds1 in yr4, he is now doing world war 2. Before was doing egyptians and Romans

Dancergirl · 25/05/2011 20:59

Dd2 did the tudors this year in Year 3!

BoattoBolivia · 25/05/2011 21:14

But Mum, the Qca documents are just suggestions of what could be taught, in the statutory National Curriculm, it only specifies Key stage.

mummytime · 25/05/2011 21:40

Our year 4's do invaders and Romans, having done ancient greeks in year 3 (and WWII), year 5 is Tudors and year 6 is Victorians. They did at one time do Egyptians, but I'm not sure if the mummified fish was the reason they changed (smelly).

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 25/05/2011 22:05

Did they really try to mummify fish? How??

Michaelahpurple · 26/05/2011 00:16

Many thanks all! Yes, I do recall a definite outbreak of Tudor portraits on year 4 walls around London schools when looking at them.
it is handy to know - I have loads of materials on vikings, anglo-saxons, Romans and Eygptians (my mother taught KS1/early KS2 for ages) and wanted to check if I needed to spread my reference library ahead of time.

They used to succeed in mummifying fish, the recipe must be on the internet somewhere. It is basically preserving them in lots of salt (and removing the insides), but it did make the school smell for weeks.

emptyshell · 26/05/2011 07:06

We just mummified everyone's little sisters' Barbies. Much less smelly (and more satisfying)

Goblinchild · 26/05/2011 07:36

You need to ask the school, they are the ones who will know what your child is doing in Y4.

Dancergirl · 26/05/2011 11:45

Just asked my dd and she told me Romans and WW2 in Year 4.

On a more general note, is anyone really impressed with what they are learning in History at primary school? Dd2's class (Year 3) have just done the Tudors and what she doesn't know about Henry VIII is not worth knowing....

You know, we all complain about our children's schools in some way but when you look at the bigger picture I think most of our children are receiving an excellent education.
