Like it!! Oh how we love pyjamas in our house and snugglies (dressing gowns).

I intend to spend a large part of the summer hols doing stuff we can't fit into a school week. Crafty Makes, chill out reading time in a hammock, bike rides, big walks , sending postcards to grandparents, going to the mobile library and continuing the you read to me I read to you stories at bedtime.

gabid · 24/05/2011 14:44

Just got my DS (Y1) into reading with me a little every day, still a bit reluctant but afterwards he feels good. We will keep that up during the holidays, he doesn't just read school books anyway. We find more and more that he can read now. We will do a bit of maths on 5 out of 7 days, and some said they are doing a holiday diary - that's a great idea! And yes, the reading challenge, we will do that again - there was a party with cake and a medal last year - he will be up for that.

Otherwise, I think there is still lots of time to fit in all those outdoors things, cooking, swimming, crafts, trips, seeing and chatting about lots of different things .... where he will use all his (maths & reading) skills and learn many more. I hope he will not slide back.

Mine will be away for 3 weeks with non English speaking grandparents, so I doubt there will be any reading/writing in English. They will get to pracise their second language though, and absorb a different culture.

We join them for the last 2 weeks and I expect I will be doing some reading/writing in preparation for going back to school. They will probably not be that keen at all though.

toughdecisions · 24/05/2011 17:31

Nothing that looks/sounds like school learning. DS will play outside loads, make dens (must relate to D&T!), play top trumps, games with dice, chess, cook and explore the beach. He will also do tennis 'camp' for a few days because he loves it; improving his social skills, hand/eye, fitness, numeracy (scoring).

Mashabell · 25/05/2011 06:37

Relax and have lots of fun.

gabid · 25/05/2011 13:10

emy72 - Mine won't be learning much English in the holidays either as we go abroad for 2 weeks and I never speak or read to them in English anyway, that's left to school and DP. Anyway, I have to work hard to compete with school to keep DS's (6) German up to scratch - so I see the summer hols a good opportunity to do that.

Chundle · 25/05/2011 13:33

When I was at school holidays were for having in making dens, riding bikes, going swimming, playing with friends etc etc not revising and studying! And we all grew up smart enough, went to uni got good jobs and degrees etc etc and that includes the kids who needed extra help at school!
So these holidays my kids will be : getting dirty, making cakes, climbing trees etc. They are only kids once - they can't climb trees as adults!!

lovecheese · 25/05/2011 13:41

(I climbed a tree with my DC's on Sunday Smile)

Chundle · 25/05/2011 14:17

Omg cheese I'd get stuck - or fall out!

lovecheese · 25/05/2011 14:49

And went on the skate park Blush...

Totally agree Issy.

JustcallmeMummyPig · 27/05/2011 10:42

dd is 6 and ds is 3 - they will do a summer scrapbook of things we do.

But i am going to concentrate on riding without stabilisers and tying shoelaces and telling the time (not just hours and half hours etc) with dd. things we never get time for...

builder · 27/05/2011 10:49

We're going to slide - it's hard enough fitting in all the playing and holidays.

Will carry on with piano practice, though.

I slid gloriously each summer with my sisterly companions and we all went to Oxbridge.

WeirdAcronymNotKnown · 27/05/2011 10:50

Marking place

Fennel · 27/05/2011 10:52

My 3 never slide over the summer, in fact they have often shown unaccountable leaps in reading age in particular, at the beginning of the autumn term (and then they slide gently throughout the year, ready for another leap the next summer). We do all read a lot, especially perhaps in the holidays, but we have never done anything formal.

Elibean · 27/05/2011 13:43

ditto builder: we slid, or not, no idea (but no holiday work ever), we all did well later on.

There's an awful lot more anxiety about childhood achievement these days Sad

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/05/2011 14:28

I just let them slide too. Summer is for fun.

mumof2littlegirls · 27/05/2011 17:13

Try some educational games - they are learning, but think they are just having fun! Reading and spelling game is great for adults too!!
