Any answers please?

What resources do you use?
How long is a session?
What do the rest of the class do while
you are with a reading group?
How often do you do it?
Do pupils complete linked activities?
Is it all oral discussion?
How do you use it for assessment?

Thank you!

I work as a ta in a y1 class and often do guided reading grous, as well as the class teacher.

What resources do you use?

the guided reading books at school. Each set has between 3 and 6 books so sometimes we have to share. They are colour coded for ability. Some have envelopes attched to them witht he key words fromt he book in. Some sets have a teacher's guide in.

How long is a session?
10-20 minutes per group. Depends on the children, reading ability, etc.

What do the rest of the class do while you are with a reading group?
Often working on other activities at their tables/work areas. May also be during free chosing time. Generally one of us does the reading and the other supports the class.

How often do you do it?
Once a week per group.

Do pupils complete linked activities?
Rarely in our case

Is it all oral discussion?
Generally yes.

How do you use it for assessment?
Class teacher does this generally and uses other reasources too for checking reading ability. However it we notice a child is reading a book easily we discuss it, check them individually and then move them on.

Thank you for the feedback.
Are your guided books linked to the published reading scheme ie Rigby star
?

They are a mix of scheme and non scheme books. Lots of different ones. We have things like ORT, Sunshine, Rigby Star, etc. and then other non scheme books such as Pig in the Pond, Funny Bones, Elmer and Wilbur, etc. Also have some fiction and some non fiction.

Sadly not too many phonics based ones right now but hopefully that is being sorted soonish.

We do Rigby Star as well as the phonics version. They're very good.

I teach guided reading once a day for 20 minutes so each group gets to read once with myself and then once every two weeks they share their home reader with another adult -either myself or my TA.

We have worksheets for each book. Sometimes we use them and other times we don't. I record their learning on two separate sheets. One is for comments and for me to show which areas of the reading APP I'm looking for. The other is a tick sheet that lasts all term. When I see evidence of something, it gets ticked.

Afternoons are hard. In two hours, my TA and I have to teach the foundation subjects, allow for Areas of provision, Outdoor play, guided reading, home reading as well as IEP work. And on top of that, the children will need individual attention for various things etc, etc. The curriculum is well and truly overloaded!
