Ds 1 came home with this tonight. Dh & I have had a go too and the Teacher will be getting a note from me tomorrow. Your thoughts and opinions would be much appreciated, many thanks!

Learning Objective: I can round remainders after division.

Write only the answers in your books. Show your working out.

1.Zoe has 108 pens. Each packet holds ten pens. How many packets does she need?

2.Derek can saw 3 boards from each plank. How many planks are needed to saw 25 boards?

3.A tennis coach has 42 tennis balls. Each box holds four balls. How many boxes does he need?

4.There are 30 children in a P.E. lesson. How many teams of four can be made?

5.There are 27 children in a class. Six children can sit at each table. How many tables are needed?

6.Cans of drink are sold in packs of four. There are 26 cans. How many packs of four can be made?

7.The 28 children in a class need rubbers. Each box holds 8 rubbers. How many boxes does the teacher need to collect?

8.Marcus has £20. Books cost £3 each. How many books can Marcus buy?

DS would have struggled with this in y2 but it certainly isn't 'rubbish'.

LawrieMarlow · 19/05/2011 22:08

I'd say that for year 2 it is on the harder side. DS is in year 2 and could have a go at this but would definitely need a bit of parental input and probably more than I would feel homework should be (I generally look at it with him and then he does it. Think that homework would need help for each one).

I think we had expected clarity with the instructions, the divsions without the instructions/problem to solve weren't problematic; its the rule for rounding. The wordy problems are indeed commonsense - but I still think that its been thoughtlessly handed out as it seems to fit the bill but I don't see consistency with the rounding rule especially if that's the learning objective.

I think it is tricky for Year 2. Not impossible but needs a little explaining. I'll be very surprised if this is a whole-class homework.

LawrieMarlow · 19/05/2011 22:12

It isn't "rubbish" though. And is interesting to realise that just working out a calculation isn't always enough to actually answer the question.

Lorelai · 19/05/2011 22:12

But it is consistent - round either up or down to the nearest whole number - that is what rounding the remainder after division (which is what the stated learning objective is) means.

handsomeharry · 19/05/2011 22:17

It is 'rounding', obviously not rounding to the nearest 10, but rounding all the same.

I don't see where the homework says round to the nearest 10?

There has been a mix up but it's not the teacher's fault. The task matches the LO.

Understand the idea of remainder, and when to round up or down after division. Year 4 Objective 6. (DfE, National Numeracy Strategy).

Represent repeated addition and arrays as multiplication, and sharing and repeated subtraction (grouping) as division; use practical and informal written methods and related vocabulary to support multiplication and division, including calculations with remainders: I can use sharing to work out divisions and can explain what I did Year 2 Objective. (DfE, National Numeracy Strategy).

IMO ds1 homework was really a piece of work for year 4. Have just put in note to teacher that ds1 struggled with the work because of the objective and word problems although he could do the calculations.

Many thanks for the help.

DD2 enjoys that sort of puzzle much more than just giving a sum to do. She has done rounding and wouldn't have any problem with working those out. She's done similar sort of problems.. She's year 2.

mrz · 20/05/2011 17:35

OK it should technically say round up to the nearest 10

As DeWe says I use similar problems with Y2 (but not sent home)
