Depends which paper - they can use one for level 2 but can't for level 3.

DD is level 2. Am a bit concerned as she said she found it tricky today beccasue they were not allowed to use hundered squares.

Was she allowed to use anything else - number lines, tens and units equipment, etc?

thebird · 18/05/2011 21:58

She says they were not which i was surprised at.

Hmm - can't think of any reason why she wouldn't have been allowed to use anything. Are you sure she did the level 2 - is it possible that she was a 2a and has made some progress recently?

I would be very surprised (and pleased)Feenie! But as maths is her weak subject I think she would have struggled without the number square which is why im concerned. I will ask her again in the morning as you know what its like trying to get information out of them after school :)

As a teacher, I would say enquire with the school. The Y2 SATS clearly say that apparatus is allowed for the written questions.

God yes - ds is in Reception, it's like pulling teeth! Smile

Not for level 3, Mum2be79.

Level 2 paper should have a 100 square, numberline 0-30, access to concrete apparatus. Not that my class really used them other than to double check answers but they should be given if they want to use them. Level 3 paper they are not given a 100square. Is a shame if your daughter didn't have this if she felt it would help her. Don't worry too much, schools only use the papers as a small part of their assesment I know before my children go in what they will score on the test in 99% of cases because working with them everyday gives a far better indication of their level than 1 paper sat on a random day in May, when they might not be feeling there best etc. Next week we can all get back to proper learning and allowing our 6/7 year olds to be children. Not that any of them have seemed in the slightest bit phased by their 'puzzle books' and have loved the extra choosing time as reward for all their hard work!!
