my dd found it hard. she doesnt like maths and was thrown by the Calculator.

all over now. phew

bubblecoral · 12/05/2011 18:53

Personally, I think there is a place for tests, but only because when they get older, that's what they are judged on for uni etc. My ds does much better through teacher assesment, because of his aspergers he finds test situations stressfull and does not show his true potential according to his teachers, even though he gets good marks. But he is going to have to get used to it, and I'd rather they were tested now so that by the time it really matters, the right provision can be in place for him and he can feel more comfortable because he'll be more used to it.

I think there will be more testing Mr Gove has already made it clear

Education Secretary Michael Gove today appointed the cross-bench peer, Lord Bew, to chair the external review into Key Stage 2 testing, assessment and accountability....The panel will publish its final report by June 2011.

The review will look at a number of issues, including

how best to ensure schools are properly accountable to pupils, parents and the taxpayer for the achievement and progress of every child, on the basis of objective and accurate assessments

how to ensure parents have good-quality information on the progress of their children and the success of schools

how to avoid, as far as possible, the risk of perverse incentives, over-rehearsal and reduced focus on productive learning

how to ensure performance information is used and interpreted appropriately within the accountability system by other agencies, increasing transparency and preserving accountability to parents, pupils and the taxpayer while avoiding the risk of crude and narrow judgements being made.

Michael Gove said:

We know parents support clear, rigorous and transparent testing at the end of primary school,

satsreadingmum · 12/05/2011 19:03

But I put it forward that Michael Gove is a tosser. Hopefully him and his kind will be long gone soon.

foxinsocks · 12/05/2011 19:05

Mine not great at maths at all and said it was fine lol. I doubt that means she found it easy probably just that it didn't bother her.

hippyhil · 12/05/2011 19:36

Thanks, yes I totally agree. Dads taken her to guides, she is chilled, so now I think it is time for a nice glass of rose....and to move on to a non sats week....

LOL Bubble at your DS. Both my DS and I also have AS, but DD doesn't. Is he good at Maths? (my degree is in Maths)

bubblecoral · 12/05/2011 22:44

Mary, I think we may have chatted on her before Smile Yes, he is good at maths, he's on G&T for it, which is a bonus because I couldn't be worse at it. He comes in very useful!

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 22:59

Lordy, DD - who really isn't great at maths - said today's paper was quite good and that she finished it all with enough time left over to check her answers. Am now worried she has completely missed the point!

StanHouseMuir · 13/05/2011 10:14

My DD came home and said she thought she had got them all correct. I wouldn't be surprised if she had.

Madsometimes · 13/05/2011 11:16

The children are having a party today. Lovely food, DVD's. They deserve it, and I am sure parties will be had in many other Y6 classrooms.

After today, the children will be concentrating on history, geography and other elements of the NC.

cswilliams78 · 13/05/2011 12:41

Hello,

My son did his SATS last year (he's in year 7 now) so can't comment on this year's paper's. I just wanted to re-assure that Secondary generally pay very little attention to SATS results. When my DS moved up last year there were detailed teacher assessments carried out long before the SATS results were available. For the first two weeks the children were very loosly setted and only properly setted after the CATS tests were carried out. They got a whole new timetable / teachers and everything.

I was furious when I first found out about CATS as after the drama of the year 6 SATS I felt the last thing a new to the school year 7 child should face was more tests but the CATS are not like that. They are cognitative ability tests and mostly done on a computer and are based on abilities and not knowledge, you can't revise or prepare for them even if you wanted to! My DS didn't find them a big deal at all and quite enjoyed them. They give a whole host of useful information including learning styles. My DS was set and given KS3 targets based mostly on these results.

I hear that most secondary schools use CATS in a similar way.

"The children are having a party today. Lovely food, DVD's. They deserve it, and I am sure parties will be had in many other Y6 classrooms."

You bet. DD's class had a Eurovision party. Great fun was had by all.

cece · 13/05/2011 16:57

I thought some of the tests this week were hard. The reading test was a real struggle even for the better readers. The maths tests too had some tricky wordy questions in them.

I predict it will give the Tories an excellent chance to complain about poor standards and so on in retaliation for the teachers daring to boycott the SATs last year.

Cynical ? Moi? Wink Grin

lovecheese · 13/05/2011 17:10

cece - very good point.

spanieleyes · 13/05/2011 18:29

The Tories had better not complain about my class, a third of them achieved a level 6 on the Optional maths paper ( is there an emoticon for "proud teacher?)

PandaG · 13/05/2011 18:37

optional maths paper?? thought the option for a higher paper had gone? DS and several of his mates are teacher assessed as at least 5a, and he scored 100% in the old sats paper he did last week for practice - I think he and several of his peers would have benefitted from an optional extension paper, but he didn't do it?

eggsit · 13/05/2011 18:42

Totally agree cece! (I think I've said that on a similar thread! Smile)

I wonder if they will use it to 'justify' reported levels in Y2 again (whether it be be test or TA). We'll certainly hear 'standards dropped in state schools....blahblah......only 1/2 11 year olds read the Times to the expected standard....blahblah....' Ugh.

seeker · 13/05/2011 18:45

why woul he have benetitted, Panda?

diabolo · 13/05/2011 18:47

*spanieleyes - are you my DS's maths teacher?

satsreadingmum So "Michael Gove is a tosser and him and his kind will be long gone soon". Errr - what's the alternative? Labour again? [God Help Us All Emoticon]

spanieleyes · 13/05/2011 18:49

We did! ( but just the maths as we're not too hot on anything else!) I have 12 year 6's in my class and 4 of them achieved a level 6-including one at 6A. The school can download them from the QCA website, perhaps you could mention it to the clas teacher, they weren't exactly widely advertised!

Feenie · 13/05/2011 19:00

Doesn't mean teachers shouldn't be teaching past 5a though, with or without an optional paper.

Well done to you and your class, spanieleyes, you must be very proud Smile

PandaG · 13/05/2011 19:28

DS loves maths, and likes maths exams too. He has expressly said he would have liked to have been tested to see what level he would be externally assessed at. He spent all Saturday mornings last term at a maths group (a city wide GandT provision) and loved it. He has been taught beyond 5a I am pretty sure, just not tested for it. Not sure whether his teacher would assess him as a 6 though - will ask the question as to why they didn't download the extension paper - there were several who got 100% in the old practice paper a couple of weeks ago.

Well done spanieleyes, sounds fab!

spanieleyes · 13/05/2011 19:41

diabolo
Errm, I might be. ( I'd better check I haven't said anything I shouldn't!)

bitsyandbetty · 15/05/2011 08:17

I am amazed you get any feedback. All I get from my DS is 'It was good'. Believe me he is not that good but at least he is not getting upset. Perhaps the school is putting too much pressure on.
