Just wondering. thanks.

They do have teacher assesments, and they are represented by the letter, not the number. The number is what they achieved in their test. The letter representing the teacher assesment indicates the level of achievement the teacher thinks they have reached within the number they score. Does that make sense?

For example, my ds was predicted 5b for his writing SAT. If he only manages to achieve a 4, then the teacher will give him an 'a' rather than a 'b'. Btw, I only have a predicted score because I asked for it for an appeal, I wouldn't have been told otherwise.

AFAIK, the level shown in the league tables is the level that children got in the exam. However, children are also teacher assessed, and the teacher assessment goes in their school records up to their secondary school, along with the test results.

Bubblecoral That's not correct, or at least it's not how it works nationally, it must be how your DS's school choose to do it.

Madsometimes is correct that there are two separate assessments- the level based on the tests, which is just a number, and the teacher's own assessment which is usually a number and letter. Both should be reported to parents and the new school. It is entirely possible for the numbers to be different e.g. if a child usually works at a level 4, but panics and has a bad day in the test, the teacher assessment could be a 4b and the test result could be a 3.

I'm happy to stand corrected, my child my be G&T, but I'm really not the brightest spark! That's just how I understood it when the teacher explained it to me.

a describes the top of the level, b the middle and c the bottom.

However, bubblecoral, your ds's teacher assessment will be submitted before the teacher knows the test results.

To the OP, teacher assessment has 50/50 weighting with the tests, and from last year is now published alongside the test scores on the league tables.

SATS results at KS2 come back marked only in whole NC Levels (i.e 3, 4 or 5), the teachers at my school then use the threshold score levels for us to internally gauge whether a child has achieved a 4c, 4b or 4a etc.

KS2 SATS are never marked by teacher assessment, although at KS1 they are.

Feenie - I didn't know that about the league tables.
