Dd1 (year 2) has been given SAT papers to do, confused???

Dd1 came home from school yesterday and said she had been given some SAT's booklets/papers to do in class, the teacher read through them with the class and asked them to answer as many questions as they could. They were told it was just for fun as the year 6's are doing them.

I am confussed Hmm, was this just ment to be a fun excersize or are they being tested? Has dd1 got it wrong and they were not SAT papers at all?

She said they were level 2 and 3 papers and she did maths and english.

I thought it was just the year 6's doing SATS, how can i find out what they were without marching into school looking like a prick?

Can any teachers on MN explain? do year 2's get tested?

As has been said in many current threads.... Y2 children DO have SATs tests. The results are not reported.
Teachers report their assessment levels to parents at the end of the year.
The tests results are used to SUPPORT their teacher assessments.

The tests don't matter. Just tell your daughter that her friend's mum is worng.

These papers will aid the teachers in making their overall assessments. They are part of a range of activities that the children will participate in.

My dd is in year two. We were told at last parent's evening (Feb iirc) that they would be doing them but in a very low key/fun kind of way.
sure enough dd came home yesterday, all happy that they had had some kind of SATS/tests just like the big year 6 children. Then they had extra play and time in the ICT suite as a treat afterwards.
I was happy with how the teacher had described it to us and later to her so I didn't ask any more.

My DD is YR2 as well, she has had her SATS this week too, and one last week.

They are just a tool the teachers use to back up all the teacher based assessments they already have.

The kids just think it's a special fun test at this age, and parents were not told in advance they were doing them. I have only worked it out because I help in school, and have an older dc there.

When dd mentioned them, I asked if she had fun, and she asked why they were doing them. I told her it was to make sure the teacher was doing a good job, nothing to do with her. Of she trotted, happy as Larry, and we haven't mentioned them to her since.

I'm quite pleased the way our school handles them, no pressure or huge build up or stress at all. YR 6 is a different matter. (it is known loacally as an aceademically pushpy primary).

Thank you so much, we have not been informed by the school about this so was a bit suprissed, luckily dd1 really enjoyed doing the papers/tests and asked me if she would be doing the next level tomorrow as she answered all the questions. I was just a bit enoyed that we were not told about it. It sounds like it was all reaxed (no siting alone in silence Grin), just seemed odd that we were not told.

Same as at our school - our Yr 2s sat SATs last month and parents weren't told, to keep it all low key. Kids thought they were doing 'booklets' on literacy and numeracy.

I have taught in a school where they didn't tell the children never mind the parents.

The head popped round the classroom door and asked for my year twos and took them off to the hall, they say the test and came back. They were thrilled because they had got a new pencil to write with and that was the end of that.

I can see why they didn't tell the parents (or the children) and i think most of the children diden't even notice they were doing tests, i spoke to the teacher this morning about dd1 being off school next week for a hospital appointment and she said that she will have to rearange the days they are doing SAT'S so dd1 can still sit them. I just thought they would have mentioned it as DD1 has Aspergers and might have freaked out with doing something different, luckily she didn't and really enjoyed doing them so i'm not too bothered.

savoy cabbage I had to laugh at your last comment about the new pencil a my DD ( yr 2) did her maths one yesterday and was more excited about the fact that she got a new pencil to write with as well.

DS has just done his as well. He came home on Monday saying that he'd done a "SATS, but the teacher just said it was a test to see how well she had been teaching them".

DS was pleased because the teacher had done the tests with them, and told them she'd rushed the ending of her story a bit as she ran out of time!
