Please does anyone know what

Writing a list of instructions in past tense is, son getting stressed.

Could it be something like Prior to going to the shop, I wrote a list of things to buy. (And yes I am Thick) Hmm

Sorry I'm confused with your title and post

Lol he has just been going over a things to remeber sheet, when writing a list of instructions

Scratch all that, its now sorted.

Son is stressing about tomorrow, and getting himself confused, in the process he confused me.

Have now sent child off to bed, for what I hope will be a good nights sleep.

After a very lengthy thread some time ago about 'opting out' of these sats, we finally decided to just leave it all at school. The stress it was causing in our home was unreal!!

We were paying a small fortune for additional tutoring and forcing extra homework. Lets be honest, we all learn best when we are motivated by a need to learn. That comes at different times for everyone....it can't be forced.

Tell your DS not to worry, he will be just fine!! The best thing we can give our kids is the confidence to know that they can achieve anything......

We were paying a small fortune for additional tutoring and forcing extra homework Shock

HarrietJones · 09/05/2011 11:19

We've not done anything with dd1 beyond normal homework. She's done a couple of practice papers at school & that's it

sogrownup · 09/05/2011 11:33

I know Indi, it seems crazy now thinking back and it feels liberating to back off!! Don't know what your school is like but the pressure at DS's is high!! We just got caught up in it all.
There must be a better way to assess teaching skills and abilities within primary education......these formal exam pressure comes soon enough!!

maypole1 · 09/05/2011 12:32

our lo has a tutor usually 1 hour last couple of weeks she had been doing 1 hour and a half.
i really hope lo dose well.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 09/05/2011 13:10

I've put this on the chat thread, too. Just had a look at the first paper, all about caving. Interview with a caver, journalist's day caving, advert for some caves. Didn't look too bad, but I expect my DS2 with ASD will have found the 'What was the writer thinking here, and why?' questions hard. Anyway, one down, 6 to go!

doglover · 09/05/2011 13:27

Sorry, EJ but you really shouldn't be posting this info about the papers until this evening.

VoteAV · 09/05/2011 13:31

EJ are you a teacher ?

doglover · 09/05/2011 13:33

If she is (I am) - she should know better!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 09/05/2011 13:53

No, just a foolish TA. Sorry! Blush

hoofhearted · 09/05/2011 17:24

My DD found it hard!

mrz · 09/05/2011 18:37

TES posters seem to think it was hard too hoofhearted

eggsit · 09/05/2011 19:01

Apparently it was an excerpt from The Times (chosen reading matter of all 10 and 11 year olds).

Now waiting for standards to 'drop' so Gove can introduce the new literacy strategy to improve standards in state schools....

doglover · 09/05/2011 19:04

I thought it was OK. Lots of 1 mark answers, only a few 3 mark responses to stretch the more able which was a shame. Most of our pupils found it fine.

forwantofabetter1 · 09/05/2011 21:14

I thought it was fine and most of our kids seemed to do well. Although some of the technical vocab was tricky for our EAL children.

mrz · 10/05/2011 07:32

An extract from the Sunday Times for 10/11 year olds?

It was long!!

Bunbaker · 10/05/2011 07:37

"My DD found it hard!"

So did mine, and she is fairly bright and good at English.

Madsometimes · 10/05/2011 09:40

Hard and very boring was dd1's verdict. However, she finished the paper which was something she had never managed in practice tests.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/05/2011 12:24

funnily enough dd loved it - raved on about the caves for much of the evening and wants to go and visit them (if only she could remember the name!) She only just finished though and she is pretty able.

Bunbaker · 10/05/2011 18:35

DD also said it was boring. She enjoyed the short writing paper today though.

clam · 10/05/2011 19:39

Surely instructions are written in the present tense?
Drive to the end of the road and turn left.
Indicate first.

Anyway, irrelevant now. As you were...

geocachingmum · 11/05/2011 22:55

We took the decision to withdraw our child from the SATs. Is there anyone out there who has done the same?

Bunbaker · 11/05/2011 23:16

"We took the decision to withdraw our child from the SATs. Is there anyone out there who has done the same?"

How did the school react? While I don't agree with the SATS, I felt that it would be a bad example to my daughter to withdraw her. She would grow up thinking she could avoid doing anything she didn't want to do.
