Learning French

Hi everyone,

I'm also posting this in home schooling

My daughter is going to a high school after the summer that teaches french and she has done German til now. I'm looking for some free online resources to help her become familiar and maybe conversant before starting school to make it easier and less daunting for her.

Any suggestions? Thanks :)

I wouldn't worry, they all start from the beginning, although some will have learned some French and will be able to move faster to start with.

I assume you speak some French. Try counting with her, greet and introduce each other in French, name the items on the breakfast table/fridge. You could then add 'I like', e.g. I like bread/pizza etc. Name the animals or play animal memory. Make games or songs ...

Try BBC Bitesize French KS3, there should be activities on all the topics covered in Y7. You can 'google' it too there are websites with free language games/songs/worksheets ...

Can't be more specific, sorry, I used to teach German and Spanish, but not French. The principle is the same though.

Thanks Gabid, no I don't speak a word of it so will be learning too and the primary schools in the catchment area all start french from year 1-3 so only a very few will be new to the language. KS3 will be way too advanced, we need to start with pronunciation before anything else. We have found the BBC Language site and are enjoying using it, the sound bites are really useful.

KS3 (Y7) Languages is the very beginning in a language, starting with introductions, numbers to 20 etc. Pronounciation will come when hearing the teacher speak/hearing CD conversations.

The fact that she is one of a few who haven't done French may intimidate her, true.

You could also try language courses with books and CDs from the library. They have several for children in our local library.

Sorry, BBC Bitesize is GCSE, yes that's too advanced. I meant KS3 meaning ( 7, 8 and 9).

Try "Snacks: Fun French for Kids." It is easy and fun to use and will teach her a lot of basic French vocabulary. But more importantly will get her ear attuned to the accent and her mouth muscles practising the sounds. That will help her make a confident start in Year 7. It's £15 from Amazon.
