Sun protection for school day-what do you do?

What do you do for a school day's worth of sun protection? Never an issue with childcare, where they applied cream or Pre school where sessions were short. Dd was reddening nicely by end of school and it's only April.

Now we live in a sunny bit of the UK they ask us to send in suncream, I think the dc put it on themselves, but people would help if necessary.

When my older dc started school we lived in Manchester, for some reason we never needed suncream there.

Given that lack of vitamin D is now a huge problem for many children I never used to bother much--apart from on days when I knew there'd be a lot of outdoor sport.

Thinking laterally here, but I don't know how schools would take it. If a navy/grey/red or whatever cardigan is part of uniform, could you exchange this for a cool long sleeved shirt in the same colour when it is sunny. DCs could put it on over polo shirt when going out (though probably wouldn't want to if others aren't?). I'm thinking that this would work over girls' gingham dresses - might not work so well for boys.

We used Piz Bruin 1 day long suncream last year at the height of summer, found it a lot lighter and easier to apply than the Boots once cream which was very very thick.

Just now havent bought anything new yet, using last years left overs - must get to Boots for bogof before we get right into summer.

I agree that a uniform rethink would be a good idea - mine are in short-sleeve polo shirts year round (chilly in winter!). Some kind of long-sleeved but loose cotton tops with collars would be better instead. I did look for UV schoolwear on the web but didn't get too far - some available in Aus. but nothing that would really fit with our school. And why don't all schools have a 'slip/slap/slop' policy I wonder - seems like common sense to me!
