Manchester Grammar Junior school admissions

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone out there had any direct experience of the MGS junior school admission process for 7+entry.
Spoke to the admissions team who seemed a bit cagey about the details; would be grateful to any parents out there who can give me some advice. My 5 year old will be going into year 1 in september, is doing well at school. We went round at the last junior school open day and was very impressed. Feel that this is the best school for him and will suit his personality.
Are there any tips to improve his chances of getting in?
Many thanks

Yes, my son took it and didn't get thru. I can tell u broadly what he did in test based on what he told me. But he is 7 yr old and it may not be 100% accurate

They do all day assessment - Numeracy - where they taught some topic and kids had to do a test based on that.

Literacy - Saw a film based on Robots and were given a quiz to describe various types of Robots as group exercise and had to write description of 1 robot that they found interesting

Reading comprehension - This was probably the toughest, with 5-6 pages of RC and answering questions. Level 3 SAT standard I guess

Reading - Gave a book to read, I think this was individual testing. Not very sure.

They also did Drama and Sports and were assessed on ability to take challenges in sports and Drama.

From my experience, I can advise to do following:

  1. Take ur boy to 1 or 2 sports activities after school so that he develops sportsman spirit.

  2. Get Bond papers in English, Maths. Verbal and NV reasoning , and if you can make him do from Age 5 to age 6-7. If he is able to complete these bond papers of Age 6-7 before the test, you have a fair chance.

They look for outgoing boys , so its important to make him extrovert as well.

Hope it helps. I am not expert, just a mom and I am guessing most of this based on my own experience.

Hi Rimi
I am thinkinig of sitting my 6yrold in Oct for y3 entrance, so any advice would be really appreciated. did you get any feedback or encouragement to try again? will you try for juniors again?

Have started doing puzzles and code games with ds in preparation, anything else besides above you suggest?

That sounds like a LOT for a 7 year old!

Is this school private or state?

Yes they gave a feedback but was very generalised and once unsuccessful, u can try next after skipping one year. So if u don't in Yr 3, u can try for yr 5.
I will try in yr 5 only if I feel he is ready.

Mum2be79, Its a private school, one of the top 5 in UK I guess. and yes its a lot for 7 yr old, but if I could go back in time, I would do all this that I have listed. I sent him without any preparation and it was a big mistake. I should have tried to find out like some moms here.

That does seem a lot!!! Your little one must have been exhausted after that.
I think I'll slowly start working through those bond assessment papers with my little one. Thanks for the heads up.

Ds is shy though, he goes swimming on Sundays, has a small group of friends at school. He isn't at all extrovert, however year 3 is a couple of years away hopefully a lot can change between now and then.

Has anyone met Dr Ray, High Master of MGS senior? How approachable is he? Have got interview with him and am feeling nervous...
