Generally each school will make its own decision.

mrz · 16/04/2011 17:51

It depends on the PAN

LIZS · 16/04/2011 17:53

They can be 30+ but there may still be a limit

cece · 16/04/2011 17:55

I believe the most it can be is 32 but I may be wrong.

mrz · 16/04/2011 18:01

There is no limit to class size in Y3 9other than that governed by the PAN and the size of the room) We once had 39!

eggsit · 16/04/2011 20:35

My son's 2-form entry year 4 cohort rose to 36 and 37 pupils, and caused a parental uprising - clandestine meetings in homes; leaflet distribution in school playground.

The HT eventually bowed to pressure and employed another teacher for numeracy and literacy each morning.

There is no limit on the size of classes in Y3. However, the school is still supposed to stick to the admission number. There is obviously a limit imposed by the size of the classrooms.

i just visited the head of my DD2 intended primary school. DD1 is already there but as we are slightly outside the catchment, DD2 is unlikely to get in as its getting more applications each year. He said if she didn't get in for reception she would be guaranteed for Y3 as he has lost every appeal for that because quote "he has no legal restrictions on class size" .

prh47bridge · 18/04/2011 09:54

Shows how little head teachers know about admissions!

Yes, there are no legal restrictions on class size so appeals in Y3 or later are much easier to win. But a win is not guaranteed. If this particular head is genuinely losing every appeal for Y3 the case they are making to refuse admission must be very weak. And, however weak the case to refuse admission, I would expect most appeal panels to get a bit twitchy about pushing class sizes beyond 33 or 34.

I suspect this is a headteacher who comes to appeal and in trying to explain what happens in their school, in effect says that they are quite happy to take 32 or 33 pupils in each class. Whilst not actually saying they want the kids they come very close to it!
It is still however for the panel to make a decision on whether to admit or not.

kitkat1000 · 18/04/2011 15:02

yes i think thats the case- the school is a large school grade 1 with over 450 kids and lots of facilities and each class has 2 teaching assistants so i dont think he is bothered about refusing in reality! I get the impression he would take more than 30 if he could but obviously can't in the infants. Its the only catholic school in the area so most people probably win later appeals due to faith reasons.

kitkat1000 · 18/04/2011 15:03

oh the school is also one of those that the governors and school do the admissions - not the LEA if that makes a difference?

Chandon · 19/04/2011 08:37

my DS (y3) is in a class of 36. new kids keep on being added every term.

It's a tiny school, I don't think there's a table for all fo them. Groups have to sit on the floor.

Am thinking of taking him out

Chandon · 19/04/2011 08:38

...and no TA

asdx2 · 19/04/2011 08:44

There are 33 in dd's year 3/4 class with 1 teacher, 1 TA and 2 SEN TAs. Last year there were 25 in each y3/4 class but word has got out that it's the up and coming best school in the area and numbers are swelling rapidly.
