Are your yr2's doing test papers in school?

DD has done a paper called "The Spider Weaver" (?) recently; is it an old SAT paper or this years - in which case, eek.

Where would they get them from? They aren't available on the internet. But as Laurie says, they are a small part of the assessmnt anyway.

2BoysTooLoud · 12/04/2011 12:53

So are there new papers each year or just old 'recycled' ones? If 'recycled' I know some mums who will be 'cramming' their kids on old papers!

lovecheese · 12/04/2011 13:13

"They are a small part of the assessment anyway"

Which begs the question, again, as to why ks1 is not ALL teacher assessed? Confused

No, the papers which have to be used are either the 2007 or the 2009 KS1 papers - where do you think these mums will get them from, 2BoysTooLoud?

Because, Lovecheese, neither the government nor the general public enitirely trust teacher assessment, no matter how rigorous Ofsted and the LEAs say it is when they check thoroughly. It's a lack of understanding, mainly.

2BoysTooLoud · 12/04/2011 14:18

I guess I thought that if old papers they would possibly be 'knocking around' somewhere.

Feenie · 12/04/2011 14:21

I don't think so.

2BoysTooLoud · 12/04/2011 14:24

Ok!

My ds only year 1 and some parents already fretting re SAT 'levels' etc. Glad that old papers not circulating about....

Feenie · 12/04/2011 14:28

It's the same as teacher assessment in Y1, Y3, Y4, etc - the only difference is just one test (which you would normally have in Y3, y4, etc anyway) and the fact that it's reported, That's it!

lovecheese · 12/04/2011 14:58

Well I trust my children's teachers, FWIW.

Oblomov, what are the 50 frequently used words, if you don't mind me asking? I have high frequency words coming out of my ears but I've got 300 not 50. Are there 50 specifically for the SATS?!

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 12/04/2011 18:04

'...some parents might just use the papers you have mentioned as practice ones so that their kids have a head start over other kids' ... What would be the point? Their kids could be trained to get level 3 on one particular paper, but as soon as they get into y3 and are doing ordinary class work, it would be quite obvious that they can't cope at that level. A recipe for misery, I would say.

Feenie · 12/04/2011 18:45

It wouldn't even get as far as Y3 - they wouldn't even sit the level 3 paper if the rest of their classwork was level 2.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 12/04/2011 19:24

True.

forwantofabetter1 · 12/04/2011 19:57

there is def copies of the test circulating at my DC's school as I was offered some!!
I politley declined as
a) I work in a school so could get my own
b)Was not really bothered as to DC's performance in them at end of year 2

His teacher told me which areas were his strengths and weakness' at a parent/teacher night, what they were doing to support it and where the assesed him to be. Thi s was quite enough for me

Feenie · 12/04/2011 20:35

Of course they are circulating in schools - we have to order them! But they aren't locked away until a certain exam time, like KS2. What do you mean, they offered them? Do you mean they offered the one they weren't using as a practice for your dc?

lovecheese · 12/04/2011 20:43

forwantofabetter1, were you really offered copies??? Confused Is that legal?

OP posts:
squashpie · 12/04/2011 20:53

Are SATS age-differentiated? by which I mean, is any account taken of a summer born child's comparatively younger age to an autumn born child? Or is it a general 'year 2' achievement level?

Feenie · 12/04/2011 21:08

A general Y2 level - exactly the same as the NC levels tracked in Y1, Y3, etc, etc.

Feenie · 12/04/2011 21:10

It's legal, but not good practice, if only for the expectation that Y2 children need to do past papers at home at all Hmm

forwantofabetter1 · 12/04/2011 21:18

Sorry didnt make myself clear. I was offered them by another parent not by the school. She seemed to think I'd want to spend my evenings cramming with DS

Feenie · 12/04/2011 21:21

That's just silly! She obviously doesn't know how the assessment system works - and wants reporting. Her own school would take a very dim view of her advertising their test materials as freely available. Daft woman.

forwantofabetter1 · 12/04/2011 21:27

who would you report a parent to!

Feenie · 12/04/2011 21:32

Well, you couldn't unless you know which school she got it from - she must work in a school, no? They would be very interested. She also has very poor assessment knowledge - as we've said, a coached test paper would either not be given in the first place if the child wasn't at that level, or wouldn't fit with the vast wealth of assessment evidence, so wouldn't affect the final teacher assessment.

forwantofabetter1 · 12/04/2011 21:41

She def doesnt work in a school so not sure where she'd got it. She did look very interested when I said I do work in aschool and could get all the papers I needed should a think it was at all helpful. Hope she doesnt try and tap me up in the future!!!

Feenie · 12/04/2011 21:55

Did she definitely say 2007/2009 papers though? She may have just meant old papers, which are available on the net I think for anyone daft enough to use them.
